Water Pump Change-1971 Evinrude-50 HP

First Post-What an awesome Forum. I have a Intertec manuual that describes dropping the gear case in one paragraph. The only advice they give is to tie a string to the gear shift wires to make reassembly easier. Anyone have any tricks or hints the want to share on this particular job. I have the OMC manual on order but I need to get going, the shrimp are starting to run and I need my boat. Thanks.

Welcome to iboats Glenn....<br /><br />Make sure the string you tie to the shift harness is strong. During reassembly, take a little grease and slick up the harness so it will go through the small hole easier. Another person pulling on the string during assembly is also helpful.<br /><br />Remember to use only premium C gear lube in the lower unit. This lube is made for electric shifts. <br /><br />Clean all fasteners good. Before reinstallling fasteners, give them a light coat of a gasket sealing compound. This will stave off the effects of corrosion and salt water. Make them easier to get back out.<br /><br />If you have any questions about the installation, don't hesitate to post.<br /><br />Good Luck.

Can I assume the harness I am supposed to tie the string to is near the right side of the bottom cylinder? Those are the only wires I see that appear they may go down to the gear case. They go to what looks like maybe a solenoid and I see no reason to tie a string to them. Am I looking in the wrong place at the wrong wires? Thanks.

the 2 wires go through a hole just below the shifter and the sylidnoid switch down into the foot through a rubber gromet . they have a conector that seporates thim . when you replace the foot be sure the rubber gromet is still there . if not the exzoust will come up in to the hood and want idle .papasaghe
