Water pump dilemma

Just bought a real fixer upper recently, and here's just a taste of why this is the case:

Apparently the water pump stopped working on this '86 150hp Force outboard and instead of foolishly looking into why, the previous owner decided to drill rather large hole in the lower transom and use (what looks like) a live well pump of some sort to feed water from the outside directly to the engine. Kind of an electric water pump, if you will. Anyway, not only does this look hideous, there are pinhole leaks that sprout out of this "pump" (into the boat, mind you) when it is turned on. Strangely enough, this setup does actually supply water to the engine (if it's enough I dont know) cuz I can see if exiting out that port (not sure of the name) it's supposed to and back onto the ground.

Anyway, if youre still reading,,, I was hoping some kind soul could help guide me on what to do next here. Might seem like a no brainer I guess, but I've never replaced an outboard OEM water pump/ impeller and have no idea how difficult it might be. I also dont know if I might be able to swap out what's there with a pump maybe made to do this, but I dont know if even such a thing exists or if it'd be cost effective to do so.

Any thought would be greatly appreciated...

Re: Water pump dilemma

i would love to see some pics of that LOL .. the water pump changed is pretty straight forward .. buy a manual there worth there weight in gold .. also check out this thread it gives you a basic idea of what you have to do .it should only take about an hour or so if everything is smooth sailing.also remember to anti-seize your bolts so it will come apart next time u need to change the water pump

As mentioned get a clymer manual. Stay away from seloc. Start with the impeller. That will require the removal of the lower unit which is easier to do when you have a manual. Problem is gonna be plugging up the Mcgyver job the other guy did to the motor. A pic would be helpful. If you can do a digital picture and dont know how to attach one PM me and I will do it for you.

Re: Water pump dilemma

Hey, thanks so much for the replies. I really do appreciate all the help.

I'll work on getting those pics up here, and also get that clymers manual-(on that note, besides ebay, any place I can find one cheap?).

I thought about marine tex-ing or stuffing some chopped glass body filler in that hole in the transom (really havn't had much luck using the Mighty Puttys out there in the past). The hole is pretty large (there's a female garden hose spigot going thru it to give you an idea on the diameter) so I'm thinking it might be beyond the abilties of marine tex (?).

Re: Water pump dilemma

Well here's the pics. I had to take the pump out where it was sitting behind the gas tank so I could get a good shot of it. Just envision, though, gobs of electrical tape wrapped around wires that were hand twisted together with a toggle switch (to manually turn it on and off) taped around the gas filler tube and you get the idea. Oh, and who needs a fuse when powering that pump, right?

If you cant make out the operation of this setup from the pics, the pump ( which was threaded through the transom) sucked in water from the outside, pushed it through that black hose, which was snaked (to the left of your screen), under the right rear seat and out through the grommet where the motor controls exit the hull. The other pic shows where the hose hooks up to a brass fitting grafted on the engine.

See, I told you it was a fixer upper! Oh, and actually as luck would have it, l already have a clymer's that apparently covers that year motor. I bought it to cover a 1994 90hp Force (Mercury Marine) I own a number of years ago.

I'll keep you posted. Thanks again.

Re: Water pump dilemma

Why would anyone go to all that work and cut a hole in a boat instead of changing the impeller... wow...
