I had my 1996 25HP 2-stroke serviced this past week for a bolt that was broken off, leaving the stud inside the block. Reasonably priced from what I can tell and the guy at the service shop was great, first time I've used them and will probably do so again...he really seemed concerned about providing value, quality, and overall service as a means to drive repeat business which would tend to put me at ease in regards to honesty.

He mentioned to me that my water pump is looking a bit worn and could use a replacement before it's too late. Didn't say it was terrible, just getting worn. I'm assuming it's the kind of thing where I could probably run it all season without a problem and service it in the fall, but who knows. Regardless, I'm just curious to hear what price range I should expect to pay for parts and labor for this type of job? Any input would be greatly appreciated. I'm hoping it falls into line with what I was told by my prospective new service shop. Thanks in advance!

I would expect to pay less than $50...because you should learn to do this job on your own. Buy the OEM manual and the impeller kit. This is almost like changing the oil and filter on your car. Boating is too expensive to pay someone else to do the easier jobs.

I don't understand......seems like the impeller would have cost less than a mechanic taking the lower unit off and looking to see that it was worn.
I'd do it myself if it was me, too.

Where do you all order your parts from when you are replacing pasts such as this? the dealer or do you recommend a certain site that carries OEM things?

If you do it yourself, take the water intake screens off the lower unit, disconnect the nuts that hold the shift shaft together, and the trick---there are little black cone-shaped "keepers" under the nuts which you'll have to slide up to see. they look like one piece but are actually split. Carefully separate the keeper without losing it and the lower unit will drop easily after you remove the bolts. Those sneaky "keepers" are the only special trick as far as changing the water pump impeller. BRP makes good impellers, BTW.
Good luck,
