Water Pump for E15ECRM

I just purchase an Evinrude 15Hp Ele. The ower said it worked okay.
When I put it in a barrel, there was only a fine spray of water coming out of the pee hole.

I ran a weed eater line down the pee hole without any difficulty. I hooked a hose to the pee hole and back flushed the unit with water coming out the bottom.

I was trying to look at the impleller but don't know how to unhook the linkage. Also I noticed on the lower unit behind the propeller there are 5 holes with screen wire behind them. The hole on the bottom looks to have been drilled out or perhaps thats the way it should be without the screen.

My questions are:
1. The fine spray mist from the pee hole, should that be a stream?
2. How do I unhook the linkage?
3. What Year is the motor?
4. Should I be conserned about the missing screen wire on the bottom hole?
5. Is the barrel causing the problem and will go away when I get on the river/lakes?

Thats again for your usual support of us older people.

Re: Water Pump for E15ECRM

Its a 1984 model

The telltale should be a full flow stream from the outlet nipple.
Maybe blocked at the engine end but take care if you remove the elbow ... it's only plastic ( but its not expensive if you do break it) Picture below shows a pee stream at idle.

When separating the shift rod it is only necessary to remove one screw from the clamp otherwise as above and in the link given. ( the link should tell you if its forward or reverse gear to select ... I forget .. forward I think)

When you have the gearcase off you will be able to remove the screen and examine it .... but it is NLA so if it is damaged there may not be anything you can do about it.

Take care when draining the gearcase oil. Level and drain screws are large slotted flat headed screws. DO NOT remove the smaller Philips headed screw near the drain screw.

In a barrel you must ensure the water is deep enough to cover the water pump, and you should not attempt to run it at any appreciable speed.

Good answers above. Five holes are the water intake to the water pump. There is a basket type plastic screen in behind that is not deep enough to reach the two bottom holes so not to worry. I would not try to remove it as they tend to deteriorate over time and will likely break during removal. Often times the water level isn't high enough for the pump to operate properly. Add more water, the more the better. Best of luck. Rick.

John, is the motor overheating?? Is the cylinder head too hot to touch? The water pump may be fine. Don't get too hung up on the tell tale.

When you start the motor cold, it should have no water coming out the exhaust ports on the upper 'leg'. It should spray some water out there when the thermostat opens, cooling the powerhead, after a minute or so. Verify by touching the head itself. You should be able to leave your finger there for a couple seconds when the motor gets to operating temp. If you can't (too hot), it's not cooling right (water pump/plumbing..), if you can, it's working fine, and the tell-tale is partially clogged somewhere.
