I'm changing a water pump in 69 Johnson, 6hp. After I pulled the lower end, I noticed a hole in the drive shaft about 3/4 of the ways up. I looked in my service manual and it shows a pin in that hole. I looked around my work area for the pin in case it fell out while removing the lower end.I couldn't find one but really doubt that there was one to begin with. Is there supposed to be a pin in that hole?

Also, do I need to lubricate anything when I install the new pump?

Thanks

Re: water pump in a 69 johnson

you need that pin, i did the same thing with mine. i snapped it coming out, but if you have NO pin at all, that means the last owner was lazy or cheap or both !

you need that pin to provide attiquite(sp) pressure to the lower crank seal so that you have enough pressure to have proper combustion and vacuum to suck in the new fuel.

your gonna have to remove the powerhead to check that the seal and all its needed parts are still there, but its only 7 bolts, and theyre small ones to boot. ive done it about 20 times on mine.put it together ,forget something and take it back apart...

ive worked on these alot and if i can be of any help, email me :)

bye
