Water Pump Kit Question - Driveshaft O-ring placement on '90 70hp evinrude?

I have a 70HP 1990 Evinrude I'm replacing the water pump on. It came with an O-ring part number 310585 - #58 on the BRP diagram. It does not really show where it goes! The manual doesn't even show the O-ring.

It looks like it goes in above the "grommet" on the top of the water pump housing, but that doesn't make much sense to me.

Does anyone know where this belongs?

Thanks!

This link provides a nice picture of the location of the O-ring in question. It is apparently a seal to keep water out of the splines at the top of the driveshaft. There wasn't one in the motor when I originally took it apart - at least not that I saw!

Take a coat hanger, cut it and straigten it out and bend a small hook in the end of it. Fish around in c/s splines to make sure no old oring parts are in them. Lube the sides of the d/s splines but nothing on the top.

That sounds like a good idea.

Thanks for the suggestion!

If the old oring was left in the c/s splines and you put it back together it could put pressure on your gears in the g/c when running. Not good.
