Water pump not pumping at idle

I have just bought a boat that has a 1975 Chrysler 55 hp outboard. Ran it today for first time ran great coming back I ran it for a pretty long ways at idle and it starting running hot and doest seem to be pumping water at idle. Switched it off and splashed water on it to cool it down started it back once I give it some throttle it's putting out water. Do I need my pump changed? Guy I bought it from says he just changed it. I dunno just don't want to burn it up ya know. Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated it.

Re: Water pump not pumping at idle

Hi Dale

welcome to iboats. Replace the waterpump unless you actually watched him replace it, assume it wasnt done. You'll still pick up a complete kit for it, so replace the impellor/housing/gaskets. whilst your at it, replace the lower gear oil, and check the compression to make sure internally is mostly a-o.k. There are some things that you should do when you buy an outboard, the above are three are pretty standard. I would also do a link and sync ( sticky at the top of the forum).

Let us know the progress:)

yep i agree. just because he said he replaced doesnt mean its working. if its running hot it must not be.

Not cooling at idle??
Could be the exhaust passages bocked.
Bad impeller.
Regular muffs don't work well on these motors(35-55).
Easy to check.J
