Water Pump on a J110TLCUR

My manual suggests replacing the water pump on my outboard once a year. It also suggests testing the water pump in a body of water. It does not inform me how to test the pump. My kicker motor pees water because of an impeller. This motor does not apear to. What should I be looking for while the boat is in the water? Should I change the water pump? Can I change the water pump myself (I am pretty handy mechanically)?

If water does not exit the water tell tale outlet, first thing to do is to clean that outlet of any clogs and restrictions.

Then test run the engine and check for overheating.

Re: Water Pump on a J110TLCUR

I did notice some overheating while at idle alongside of the dock. The alarm sounded which is what I draw this conclusion from. I am having difficulty finding an illustration of a water tell tale outlet for this motor. I would like to know which hole to clean. What should I use to clean it with? Pipe cleaner? Forced water? Any advice? My manual seems to be lacking this kind of information and just suggests that I replace the pump. Sounds expensive.

On the back of your motor, between the cylinder banks,is the exhaust cover. It has an elbow that has a hose going to the lower motor pan,to the tell-tale fitting.Clean the hose and fittings, and get back to us,please.

DHP

if you do it yourself, parts should run like 50-65 bucks depending on where you purchase them for a new water pump/impeller and gaskets. I think a local marina would charge 1 hour or at max 1 and 1/2 half hours to fix.

That hose that DHP was talking about was very very clogged. That was an easy fix. Water is coming out tell tale outlet now. Do you think I did any surmountable damage to the water pump (or worse) and/or should I get the water pump serviced if everything is working? Suprising the manual does not cover this. I wonder how much more I am missing. Thanks for the help ya'll!!!
