Water pump replacement

2001, 150<br />If a water pump and gasket replacement is done properly, will any water enter the area below the pump base where the drive shaft connects to the lower unit. If it does, will this cause damage to the lower unit.

I would say there would be no need to replace or remove the base plate on a 2001 motor, or replace the housing. Just change the impeller.<br />If you MUST remove it, it has the be shimmed correctly or you will get water into the gearcase.

By shimmed do you mean the gasket below the pump base?

Yes<br /><br />This topic has come up before and the advice was to leave it there. If you have a manual, it says that it has to be "Shimmed", which I assume is the packing beneath it to adjust clearance.<br />Why do you need to change this part ?<br />I'll try to dig up the post.

I am not a mechanic by any means, but I would assume that they mean shaft/gears need to be shimmed so there is proper alignment of the meshing gears going to the prop shaft. Kinda like shimming a ring & pinion for the differential in a car or truck.<br />I see no reason to mess with that, just do the pump kit.

hello<br /> there is no pump base shimming on merc v6 motors. used to be many many years ago but only if you changed the water pump base. the simming was due to the upper driveshaft tapered roller bearing race was against the base of the pump and you had to maintain a preload.I always replace it as a kit and I reccommend doing the pump kit,thermostats and pressure relief valve diaphram at the same time. the object here is you never "need" a pump and if you ever "need" a pump there can be a very good chance you will need head gaskets and or pistons as well. so dont sweat any shimmimng. without going to the manual does your pump use a plastic upper housing or a metal one? if its metal I replace it every other kit. if its plastic I replace the entire upper housing kit. if you dont remove the lower base then nothing will enter the gearcase. no worries. if you do remove the lower base then clean the area as best you can with carb cleaner spray and air.object here is to make sure sand and such does not fall into the upper driveshaft bearing.<br />if the seals in the lower base are good and not leaking and the base is not melted at all leave it be. if it shows any signs of melting replace it. that goes for the upper as well. the kit comes with all the gaskets and seals you will need with some left over.<br /> good luck and post back if ya need more info
