Water Pump Troubles

have a suzuki 9.9 2 stroke outboard motor. It pumps the water good for about 5 mins then stops to a trickle or all together. I can turn off motor and wait a few mins and will do the same thing again. I have taken off the water pump. I dont know how to tell if the impeller is bad or if that is what I should be looking for. Any help will be greatly appreciated

If an impeller is bad, it looks bad. There would be tears or bits missing. As long as it's off, put in a new one regardless. Also backflush the system while the gearcase is off. There could be a clog inside just volleying back and forth. Backflushing is usually accomplished through the thermostat opening. But first, make sure the pee hose doesn't simply have a chunk of debris in it that could be volleying around inside.
