HI,
I have a 1989 Mercruiser 3.0 Alpha One.
I bought the boat/motor used 3 months ago, but have not yet had it in the water. We have notices a very small amount of oily substance leaking from the weep hole on the lower front of the lower unit. I started it on muffs in the driveway. It ran fine. After I turned it off, I noticed a great deal of lower unit gear grease leaking out the week hole. I spoke to the mechanic who worked on the boat for the prior owner...he offered to pressure test the lower unit if I brought it in.
He discovered a leak around the base of the water pump. He removed the water pump, replaced the fiber gasket, but could not get a seal. The rubber o-ring that attaches to the water pump and slides into a small cavity below the water pump would not seal. He removed the water pump several times trying to get the unit to seal...with no luck.
Any ideas? Would the most likely cause be the incorrect size of o-ring? (it is approximately 2 inches in diameter.)
Thanks for any ideas...
