just put a small bead or film of sealant on the upper edge of the L/U where it meets the midsection. It's not mission-critical; other words it doesn't have to hold pressure. I think it's more for corrosion control or vibration or, something. I use it cause it's in the manual, but lot of guys don't.
Don't overthink the shift rod. It isn't hard to turn, but it doesn't freewheel, either. It's crooked on the end, offset to one side so unless it makes a complete revolution (which it won't on its own), you won't have any trouble keeping track of it. You'll see what I mean soon as the L/U comes off.
Do scribe a mark across the edge of the trim tab, so you can get it back where it was. Also note there's another bolt up in the trim tab cavity.
