Re: Water Pump Working? What to Expect?

just put a small bead or film of sealant on the upper edge of the L/U where it meets the midsection. It's not mission-critical; other words it doesn't have to hold pressure. I think it's more for corrosion control or vibration or, something. I use it cause it's in the manual, but lot of guys don't.

Don't overthink the shift rod. It isn't hard to turn, but it doesn't freewheel, either. It's crooked on the end, offset to one side so unless it makes a complete revolution (which it won't on its own), you won't have any trouble keeping track of it. You'll see what I mean soon as the L/U comes off.

Do scribe a mark across the edge of the trim tab, so you can get it back where it was. Also note there's another bolt up in the trim tab cavity.

Thanks jtex,

Awesome! kenmyfam provided a nice thread where he photographed the entire process. Very detailed. He is quite a snapper! :) (not sure if he is still getting this thread).

Seems to me I should just step-up and buy the Sierra 18-3392 repair kit. Do I have this right for a 1985 EV 140 VRO (V-4)?

Thanks for that. I only replace with the BRP equipment on a water pump though. Just my opinion but it is a little risky on something that saves me frying my motor !!!

BRP (bombardier recreational products) is the new OEM supplier (they bought evinrude & johnson from OMC). buy direct from them at www.shop.evinrude.com , www.ishopmarine.com sells BRP parts, lower price but higher shipping, but a good source for little pieces like hardware, o-rings, chemicals (3m 847 for example and OMC gasket sealant which I highly recommend as an anti-seize for lower unit mounting bolts) etc. that iboats doesn't sell. otherwise we generally like to buy from iboats as much as possible, to support the forum.

I installed the sierra impeller earlier this year...so far, so good.

I agree, iboats has the Sierra kit so I will probably just get it there.

Re: Water Pump Working? What to Expect?

Hey guys,

I ordered the water pump repair kit and will be rebuilding that in the next week (or at least starting that job).

I went ahead and started the engine once more just to clearly see where I stand BEFORE rebuilding the water pump.

I took 3 photos (all with engine idling). Please have a look at each and tell me what you see and think. Thanks.

Photos:

1007B.1 - the pee stream running out of the tell-tale.

1007B.2 - lots of water gushing out of the lower unit.

1007B.3 - water coming out on the engine. this is weird.

Can you please comment on each photo.

Photo 1 may be moot as I am changing the pump anyway - but seems it can indicate the quality of water flushing throughout block?

Photos 2 and 3 are my biggest concerns, especially 3.

Photo 2 seems to indicate to me the bond between the lower case and mid engine is not tight and the water is just finding a way out.

Photo 3 is just not right at all.

Thanks much!!!!! Happy boating this weekend.

Photo #1, hard to tell from the pic...when we say "pee stream," we mean it really looks like a pee stream...yours looks kinda like it needs a prostate exam. Or more like, the nipple is missing, like water running out of a faucet. That sort of thing can reduce your water pressure. It should be more like a nozzle.

Photo #2, totally normal.

Photo #3, can't tell where that is...but if water is accumulating under the cowl, most likely your telltale hose has sprung a leak.
