I have a 1977 115hp 6cyc. Mercury outboard engine, and looking to see if it is hard to change the water pump. I finally got it to run and noticed now that the engine is getting hot. So im figuring that the water pump isn't working. The motor sat for about a year. Any good way to change the water pump.
Thanks,
Terry

Re: Water Pump

It's not hard if you know how to use a wrench. Remove the lower unit, (6 bolts) and you'll see the water pump housing on the drive shaft. Remove the housing, and you'll see the water pump impeller. Remove that and replace it. Lube up the inside of the water pump housing with something NOT petrolium based. (soap, butter, pam spray, whatever) Turn the drive shaft by hand as you slide the pump housing over the impeller. Now bolt everything back together and you're done. :)

Terry, To expand on what ZmOz said. One of the six bolts is hidden under the zinc anode above and behind the prop. Use a 1/2" socket on a 3/8" extension through the hole behind the water gratings above the antiventilation plate, to remove the anode, and expose the bolt.

Make sure you do not change the shift shaft position, when the LU is off. I leave it in neutral, and it seems to work.

When you are installing the new water pump impeller, pry up the water bump base and put on the new o-ring and base gasket that cane with the kit. Also watch for the drive shaft key that turns the impeller. If the shaft has corroded, you may need a bit of sandpaper to remove enough corrosion to get the water pump cover off.

When assembling, make sure you put the white plastic tube into the waterpump outlet. You must then slip the white plastic tube over the copper water tube in the motor's midsection. Turn the flywheel as you install the lowerunit, so the splines align.

Have a look in www.myfishingpictures.com under a member called Hoo's yur daddy. He has some sequencial pictures (about 20) of a similar motor to yours. There are some good detailed pics of the job...
A manual is also useful.
