My 05' 60tlrd Yamaha suddenly stopped pumping until I put it in fast idle. Then I could cruise on but, fast idle on each move. It has never been in the shop. I installed a Yamaha water pump kit. I was suspecious because every thing looked good. Went fishing and backed into the launch. Started the motor and it pumped emmidiatly. I completed the launch and it shifted OK. Ah, success! Not, the first time we moved it did exactly the same thing, had to use the fast idle to get it pumping. Proir to changing the pump I had removed the intake louvers and flushed the motor between trips. I did not use the flush "muffler" after the repairs as I thought it might blow off the water tube. Now what??

Re: water pump

Is it overheating? I'd want to see if there was any circulation. Maybe pop out the thermostat to see If water makes it this far into the engine when it's running. If it does, Its a good indicator your pump is working, if not well... it doesn't tell you much. My engine has a water pressure regulator or popit valve. When the engine runs fast, the popit dumps excess water pressure. If this is stuck open, it will take more engine speed to build water pressure. Not sure how your engine regulates water pressure but check this area. Hope this gives you some direction, good luck

Re: water pump

If The impeller has not been changed recently replace it right now or risk a blown motor.
