I have 65 Johnson Model # 65ESL-73R I am trying to change the water pump. I can not get the lower unit off. I have taken out 5 large bolts, 2 on each side and 1 larger bolt in the middle. Is there something else I have to do? Please help.

Re: Water pump

You have to release the gear shift, inside the engine (goes right up from the lower unit to the upper)
On mine its simple and guess its the same on yours.
Maybe you still got one bolt left under the caviation plate (not sure)

Re: Water pump

There is a bolt under the trim tab and as mentioned above ,you'll need to disconnect the shift rod under the lower carb area. You really should be using an engine manual before performing this procedure.
