Seems like my Water Seperator filter is stuck on its housing. How can I get this off and what preventative maintanance can I use to keep this from sticking again.

Thanks,

Use a strap wrench to get it off. Also when you install a new one coat the gasket with a light coat of oil or dielectric grease.

Petiboy, If the strap wrench doesn't work (they crush the filter and then slip) use a "Stilson" or big pipe wrench to remove it. Alternatively, West Marine sells a new water seperator unit with two filters for ~$25. Use the oil on the gasket to install the new filter!

Believe it or not, I've had to use a big pipe wrench to get some off. Even with grease on the gasket, sometimes they're a booger. I've learned not to put them on very tight. ;)

Most of the time using both hands on 2 strap wrenches, 180 degrees apart, gives enough torque to remove a stuck filter.

When installing the new one, oil the rubber seal ring and hand tighten the cannister only.
