Hi SS Minnow,<br />As a plumber with 35 years in the trade, I would advise you to check what sort of teflon tape you used. In Australia the white threadseal tape used in the trade is suitable for water only, it will gradually dissolve or deteriorate when in contact with petroleum based fluids or gases of any kind. There is a special teflon tape used for gas pipe threads (natural gas or propane - butane types) which is resistant to petroleum products, this would be suitable for your purpose, in Australia it is a yellow colour and available from most hardware stores at almost the same cost as the standard type. <br /><br />The use of correct tape is part of the Australian Standards because of explosion or fire risk when the white tape has degraded sufficiently (has happened). Your local plumbing supplier or hardware store should be able to advise you what is available.<br /><br />Bob
