Water seperator concern.

I recently installed a Tempo fuel/water seperator on my boat. On one of the threaded fittings for the fuel line, I noticed the teflon tape turned a tanish color. This to me indicates that fuel somehow came into contact with it,indicating a leak. I checked for wetness around it and there isn't any. The fitting isn't cross threaded and is really tight. Should I be concerned? Thanks

I wouldn't be, just keep an eye on it. It may have "wicked" a little.

Thanks.<br /><br /> Daily,for about a week, I have been feeling around it with a dry finger, and there isn't any gas on the threads remaining. I don't want the gas to eat away at the teflon tape though. As long as I dont go "Kaboom" or get stranded out on the water I will be good to go.

Hi SS Minnow,<br />As a plumber with 35 years in the trade, I would advise you to check what sort of teflon tape you used. In Australia the white threadseal tape used in the trade is suitable for water only, it will gradually dissolve or deteriorate when in contact with petroleum based fluids or gases of any kind. There is a special teflon tape used for gas pipe threads (natural gas or propane - butane types) which is resistant to petroleum products, this would be suitable for your purpose, in Australia it is a yellow colour and available from most hardware stores at almost the same cost as the standard type. <br /><br />The use of correct tape is part of the Australian Standards because of explosion or fire risk when the white tape has degraded sufficiently (has happened). Your local plumbing supplier or hardware store should be able to advise you what is available.<br /><br />Bob
