I tried googling this, and what I got were a bunch of engine coolant temperature gauges. I don't want that. I'm wondering if there are "ambient water" temperature gauges? That would be a neat accessory to add to my boat. I did find one depth finder that had temp built in to. My depth finder does not.

As you mentioned, many depth finders have a water temperature gauge built in. So, that could be your route. Otherwise check out the "Lowrance water temperature sensors", but typically, it is part of a multi-function gauge.

My cheapo $100 humminbird fish finder reads water temperature. I think I rely more on that then the actual fish finder. There must be some sort of economical water temperature gauge out there.

Check out fish hawk brand. I don't know how good they are but they are supposed to read temperature throughout the water column. Sounds like a good tool for fishing. Knowing the temperature at different levels would be key for serious fisherman.
