Re: water temperature gauge problem

csanna, read the entire thread - new OEM thermostat & sender installed.

Kopycat, when you grounded the wire at the sender end, did you also wriggle and pull on the loom at the same time? Your eratic readings happen when you slow down suddenly or fire up the motor etc (your words).IMO an electrical connection is playing up in relation to physical movement.

Aldo

DUNARUNA-Yes, I've moved the wire loom closest to the sender unit to see if there's any reaction at the gauge. The problem persists even if the boat is sitting calm in the water-no boat movement. The time the gauge takes to fall back to 0 upon starting the engine and water starts to move through the engine is about 5 seconds-not instant-but not real slow. I think it's an electrical problem, but haven't found where as yet.

This may sound like an unusual solution, but could you bypass the original wriring and rewire the temp gage by yourself with new wire. Perhaps that would help.
Roman

Re: water temperature gauge problem

kopy kat, i know how u feel man i have been there...

this is what I did to narrow down my problem!!

I took my "working" temp gauge and ran new sending wire (a spare wire) to the the gauge and to the sending unit, and ran a new ground (again another spare wire I had) to the guage then to the engine block... fired her up ran her for a few and whaalaaa she was a working!!

it seems like a lot to go though to check the wiring but it will also rule out the possibility of a bad guage, if you KNOW u have it wired correctly and u KNOW u have good wire and that u have a GOOD ground and GOOD sending unit, and it doesnt register, then it would most likeley be the gauge. If she works, its your wiring... easy as that!

good luck
kid

I Just Found your Problem...............
I think there might be a missing plastic deflector that either sits above the th. or under it.
Yes......
You Need the Plastic Sleeve that sits Above the T-Stat............... ;)
Your engine is running Dead Cold, because it's By-passing the T-Stat...............

captkid,
Did you ever get that 470 Running ??????

Re: water temperature gauge problem

Bondo--I've replaced the plastic part--no difference. While running across the lake yesterday at 3,000 rpm---the guage would every now and again swing up to 150 degress, then settle back down to 0---this process took about 8-10 seconds. I'm not worrying about overheating--I just want the #*!? gauge to work - all the time! I guess the next step is to do the seperate wiring and see if that makes a difference. Thanks for all the replies. :)
