Man I’m just full of fun! First my rude now my kids 1970 85hp Chrysler. Just hate to junk it because of a water problem. This old boy not pumping water, so I dropped the lower and found a nice new w/pump. All looks good in there and thinking it’s the T/stat with a clog. Now the fun part, the stat is in the head itself and can’t be removed without removing the head. Before I bust off some old bolts is there a way for me to make sure it is the T/stat? Any tricks I should know? The rest of the engine is great shape. Thanks in advance..

Re: WATER

None that I know of. You really have to have it out to check it. Has this motor been run in saltwater?

Re: WATER

Hello I'm sure it has been in salt. There is a bolt on the top near the t/stat in the block itself. If I could get it off I would be able to see if there is a clog at the t/stat. Just worried as to busting off the bolts. Thanks anyway for trying.

If you decide to rebuild , try Anthony . His email address is
linda@nu-z.net
I got a NOS gasket set for my 55 last summer real cheap. He may have your set.

Re: WATER

The bolts in that old 85 will rarely snap off unless they appear to be pretty corroded. The block is aluminum and the threads are tapped directly into the aluminum block. No steel on steel or anything like that to worry about.
If you are really concerned, heat each one with a small propane torch first. Get the bolt red hot on top and then (wearing a leather welding glove), lay a soaking wet rag on the bolt and cool it off before trying to turn it.
You don't want to turn it while the bolt is expanded, because the corrosion is just making the joining surfaces even tighter. In addition, the bolt will be softer and more inclined to snap.
You want the bolt to cool off and shrink back to norm. This will break up the corrosion a little between the block and the bolt.
I have had them snap off on me on the 87-89 125's due mostly to the fact that the bolts rotted part way off in the head. (steel on steel). But you shouldn't have a problem.
Slow and steady wins the day....
