Re: Watersports - turn engine off between riders?

Sorry, WCA_TIM, looks like I interpreted your post wrong. I took it as you were saying it was OK to point UNLOADED guns at people. We usually see 3 or 4 accidental shootings of kids by other kids playing with guns they don't realize are loaded every year down here. I really didn't want anyone to get the impression it was OK to play around pointing a gun at someone as long as they thought it was unloaded.

My daughter's has also been shooting my AR's since she was around 10 years old (she's 21 now). She has one in 9mm that she loves to show up all the potential boyfriends on the tactical combat course with!

If you're ever down around New Orleans, I'll be glad to take you out on the boat and out to the range!

Re: Watersports - turn engine off between riders?

back on subject....

the rule in my boat is.....unless circling a downed skier....the motor is off....

if the captain at any time looses sight of the skier (when he is close to the boat) the motor gets killed instantly.

i take that very seriously, it is one of the stronger rules on board.....(whoever is driving will get yelled at harshly, if they break that one)

another rule i have that everoybody hates......i insist on all deep water swimmers (not being able to touch the ground) to be wearing a life jacket...even if it is for a 2 second cool off dip.

we used to climb in off the drive, (stepping in off the anti cav) but ill be adding the swim grid, so that will no longer be an issue.

but the earlier comments about someone slipping and cutting themselves on the prop makes sence.....

Yo oops!

Really on that rule? I mean, most of us in our raft ups end up with a lifejacket on just because we want to float with our beer in hand, but even just for a swim you want a jacket on? Even adults?

The kids MUST wear one while swimming in our circle of boating friends/rafters, no ifs/and/buts , but the adults meh.

While I was taking my classes with the power squadron i was told not only to tun it off, but turn it off while on shift to stop the props turning. That is what I do everytime, I never idle my motor while switching riders...

Seems to be consensus on turning off the motor but I'll pile on my 2 cents.

Our boat dealer took over an hour with us when we picked up the new boat going over all her features and operations. He said when changing skiers or tubers it's second nature for him to both shut off the engine and place the key on the dash and recommended we adopt the same habit.

Probably a little too much but I see the logic. All my passengers know not to touch the dash or any equipment.

Plus, taking the key out would kill the tunes. :D

Holy cow! You mean the key actually comes out of the ignition on the boat? I thought that was just for looks / show! Heck if I took it out... I might lose it! if I did that out on the water.... then where would I be?!?!

Actually a couple years back out on the lake we frequent in the Okanagan valley, there was a couple of drowning fatalities.
Both cases were adults who just jumped out for a really quick cool off dip - the wind suddenly came up and separated the swimmers from the boat - they panicked and drowned.
So simple, but resulted in tragedy.

A couple of additions from me here . . .

I also don't like using the drive as a step due to the possibility of cuts, But anybody that thinks the weight of a swimmer on the drive comes anywhere near the forces that the horsepower of the engine puts on the drive and the transom is simply not thinking clearly ;)

Also, I post this story almost every year. It is terrible to read, but I guarantee it was even more terrible to experience . . .

26-Year-Old California Man Dies After
Tragic Boating Accident on Lake Mohave
At about 8:00 p.m., Sunday, May 29, a 26-year-old man named Eddie Cortez from Pico Rivera, California was fatally injured in a tragic boating accident. The victim and a group of friends were boating on Lake Mohave. He and a few friends jumped off the back of the boat to go swimming. Someone on the vessel accidentally turned on the engine and the victim?s legs were cut off by the boat propeller. He was taken to Telephone Cove on the Arizona side of Lake Mohave where help was waiting. He was transported by ambulance to the hospital in Bullhead City, Arizona. He was then pronounced dead by the medical staff (exact time unknown). This is all we know at this time.

guess i don't have anything to add other than agreeing with the consensus.... engine off while in the water around the boat. i always climb up my drive... put the middle of my foot on the back of the trim ram, toes grasping the part of the drive the trim ram bolt goes thru.... works great and have been doing it since i was a kid..... guests on board, and i get the portable ladder out for their safety.
always leave my key in the ign. but don't think about touchin it lessin a say so. theres no reason anyone should touch the key other than the skipper. short of skippers orders. as for the tunes. wire'em up hot so ya don't have to have the key on to be hip......
as for swimming around my boat in deep water. usually i wear a life jacket. sometimes not. but usually have a line in hand as i go overboard..... life jacket or not... don't want to let my boat float away faster than i can swim to catch it.......

I may try to enforce OOPS rule next time we go out:

......i insist on all deep water swimmers (not being able to touch the ground) to be wearing a life jacket.

Can you imagine the giggles at skinny dippers in life jackets???? :D

I think that's overly excessive and silly. It's akin to the instructions given in automobile manuals for changing the oil in your car. They all tell you in the early steps to "disconnect the battery cable"....but come on now.....Really, how many of you yank your battery cable to change your oil? How many automobiles have you heard of, just starting up on their own during an oil change?

Turn the boat off when you have people in the water, but remove the key as well? Why not just turn off the boat, pull the key, disconnect the battery and quickly remove the prop from the hub for safety? Geez.....

Hmmm...Ya know, I am thinking of a couple of our situations, and I have actually done that when their are kids aboard. We had a couple of 2 year olds, and 8 and 12 year old on the boat along with the 4 adults. When we went tubing and getting in and out, I did take the key out. Just for that couple of seconds one of the 2 year olds could have discovered the key and turned it.

Well, how much longer does it takes to pull they key you just turned off? Not that I do that, my key dont stay in the switch anyway as is worn out.

Re: Watersports - turn engine off between riders?

I hope to pull my first tube on the weekend of the 4th. I am not sure I even thought of this. I will now. My 9 year old will thank you. A day on the boat with no injuries has got to be one of the best days possible.
