weak fire

i have a 150 mariner that stopped fireing on 4 cyc,a friend told me it was the trigger,well i replaced it and now it fires on those cyc but weak.the fire gets better if i give it a little gas.but motor dies if in the water and i try to put it in gear and take off.what should i try next?

stator if your switch box is not power by 12v from battery.

Not sure about yours.

how can you tell if it is powered by 12 volts or not?it has a 12 volt battery.any one know were i can get best deal on a new or used stator?thanks for your help.

If the stator has more then 2 wires (not including ground, if it's not already grounded via case), your ignition is likely powered directly by stator.

Without knowing the exact make/model/year, I don't think you'll get much help here.

stator maybe. ya need a manual (OEM) for your motor ta get to tha bottom of your problem. All switch box V6's ignition's work tha same from '76 ta '99. size of chargin' systems are tha only difference. Yours could be a 9, 16, 2 wire 40 or 4 wire 40. need a little more info to tell what your lookin' for. if its a 2000 or newer ya need ta get it diagnosed cause tha electronic parts are a little pricey ta just change cause it "might" be tha problem................JMO

i think it is a 1985,serial number is 6617426.i was trying to check the volts awhile agoe and found that it is jumping from 13.2 down to 6.0 with it running,just up and down and readings in between that,when not running it is a steady 13.2 stator has 6 colored wires and 4 black wires.

sounds like its junk. should have:
1 red
1 red/white
1 blue
1 blue/white
2 yellow
1 black (most do, some don't)

you think the stator is bad?is it ok that another stator just has one black wire?only difference is the 4 black wires

???? Never seen 4 black wires on a V6 stator. Bought my first V6 in 1976 so I think I've seen every kinda stator Merc has ever built. Have no clue what you have................
