hi i have a 1988 sunrunner with a 350 chevy and a volvo 290 duo prop outdrive my engine runs good but i have this loud grinding noise comming from the back near the flywheel. im thinking it cant be the ujoint because the noise doesnt go away when i have the boat in neutral and the noise doesnt go away when i rev the engine. Has this happened to anybody does anybody have any recomendations anything would be appreciated thanks!!

Re: weird grinding noise?

The input shaft still turns when not in gear. So don't rule out the U-joints,gimble bearing yet.
Pull the drive and inspect it.

Re: weird grinding noise?

thanks for the replys so today i took my boat to the boat mechanic and sure enough when he told me to start the boat it didnt make the noise it made yesterday ... but anyways he inspected everything and found out that the bellows had a crack in it and the ujoint was a little rusty from water intrusion but the mechanic said he thinks we should be fine as hes going to replace the gimbal bearing and bellows and regrease the ujoint so im hoping i will be ok

Sounds like you've got it under control. In the hands of a pro.:)

Would you please let us know how this repair goes. Update us on the details, what the mechanic says etc. How much the work costs help others get an idea of repair costs they may be facing. Plus I'm curious.;)

I'll bet your boat handles great with that 350 w/duo prop. Whats the boat length?

Hope the repairs go smooth for you.

Re: weird grinding noise?

i'll definitelty let you guys know how it goes the mechanic said sometime next week it will be ready to go! as for the boat length mello its a 22ft cuddy and yeah the duo prop makes a huge difference. There is absolutely no torque steer and the boat gets on plane very quickly it also tops out at low 50's although i never can go that fast because the wind on cape cod is ridiculous haha but anyways thanks again !
