Weird Trim Problem

First I would like to say thanks for all the help over that last several months, all the post have helped me rebuild a 1995 Bayliner. 1850 Rebuilt 4.3 and new interior.

I am in the final stages now and the Trim has me stuck.

Its a Alpha Stern Drive with hydraulic trim. When I first started working on it it wouldn't go down or up and could not bleed system but the pump would run both ways. I have since rebuilt the pump assembly. I now have it going down with the down-button and up with Trailer-button. Up-button is not working, I assume solenoid.

The weird part is when I hit the trailer button, it lowers maybe a foot, then goes all the way up as it should. I don't remember this behavior. When it goes down, it goes down to about a foot off the ground, then goes up a couple of inches and grinds not moving the rest of the way to the ground. Tried applying pressure on the lower end with no results while trimming down.

Not sure what to search for, I cant believe I am the first to this issue.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Weird Trim Problem

If that is a three wire motor (blue, green and black), maybe you are applying voltage to both the green and blue wires at the same time? That would make the trim motor fight itself to move the OD up and down at the same time.

BTW - the trim button is wired thru the trim limit switch. The TL switch is on the pivot of the outdrive, open to the water, and generally rots out after a while.

Re: Weird Trim Problem

Thanks for the advice, I was able to figure it out. I had installed the two hydraulic cables backwards on one side of the gimbal housing.

Also a note to the newbies like me. I was stuck on how to bleed the system. The manual requires you to detach the two hydraulic cables on the gimbal housing. The two bolts were impossible to access. They are easily removed after the metal guard was removed which I assumed incorrectly was part of the bell housing but wasn't. The metal guard has two bolts on its underside.

Gee, that PTT system should be self bleeding. You should be able to cycle it up/down a few times and the air should bleed out.
