First off, thanks to everyone who helped me get this engine running again. It fires right up with no effort at all. Its a late 80's Force 50.
I made plans to take it out on Thursday, even took a vacation day for it, for a friend who is returning from a deployment overseas. I was pretty stoked that I got it running so good just in time for him to come back.
Of course, now it's having problems shifting. When running, it won't go into forward at all. It will go into reverse, but it keeps popping in and out of gear. What is strange is that I haven't adjusted anything on the gear shifting mechanism - not a thing - since I had it out on the water two weeks ago. It shifted perfectly fine then.
However, push the control handle forward or backwards while the engine is off, and the gearcase behaves like it should. It won't spin in forward or reverse, but it will in neutral. Start it up, and it doesn't want to do either correctly.
When it does go into reverse when the engine is running, it does make a clicking sound for a few seconds before engaging. My manual doesn't appear to be written for those needing to diagnose gearcase problems; it was written for those who want to take a gearcase apart and put it back together. The troubleshooting section is all obvious fuel and ignition checks.
I did play with the idle speed a bit (don't have a tach, so I'm guessing) thinking that maybe it was idling too fast to engage, but that didn't seem to help.
Any ideas?
