Went to the boat store today...

Kids (really) wanted to go to the boat store today (Saturday) to look at the boats. We saw a really nice looking Bayliner Discovery 192 cuddy there for $24k and started thinking hard about it. I don't think I want to buy new & I really can't afford thinking about something over $10k (realistically), but looking at those shiny new boats really was tough. Looked through the parts store for some of the stuff my 30 yr old Century needs and it just didn't hold the same excitement. I'm in trouble.

All that being said, I asked about their used inventory and I was really disappointed. They had a 2000 Bayliner Capri bowrider there for $8500, but it really looked rough to me. Needed new carpet, the vinyl was old looking, etc. I don't think I'd feel comfortable paying more than $4k for it (no idea what mechanical and structural condition it was in). I guess I thought buying a used boat from a boat dealership would be like buying a used car from a car dealership - I expected all the used inventory to be detailed & fixed up to look and run as well as it could, engine/structure inspection & certification, etc.

Oh well... no real point to this, just relating my experiences. Someday a shiny new(er) boat will sit in my driveway :) Hopefully some brave soul will be willing to take a well maintained/restored 30 yr old OMC under their care in the not-so-distant future :)

Re: Went to the boat store today...

I hear you, just came back from the Ottawa Boat show today, sadly my problem is not between used and new, its the type of boat. I want to get a new Mastercraft or Supra wakeboard boat, with full gps perfect pass, huge ballasts and what not, but..... the wife wants a Cuddy Cabin so we can enjoy more quiet time on the boat... yikes. We're hoping to change the Bowrider this year, but we are at both ends of the spectrum with what we want... being 27 years old sucks, ahahah, I am still a big kid inside, yet the wife is a little more mature. Maybe I will have to concede this and get the nice Chaparral cuddy and slap a waketower on it!

but like you, i am stuck between 2 worlds!!!

Yikes is not the word I would use in this situation, to each is own. Of course I'm thinking about my wife, and have not met yours :D

I often go for similar reasons......but I take the opportunity to look at the new "bells and whistles" that I may try and add to my old relic......

Kids will always like to go look at the new boats because they get to climb in and touch things!

We're headed to the Philly boat show next weekend. I pity my wife if they have some ridiculous sale or something on a boat that fits us. She's already worn out from our 2 little girls, I'm not sure she needs another whiney, mopey 32 yr old big baby sulking around her :D

Maybe we'll take the truck to the show just in case someone decides to give us a boat :)

Re: Went to the boat store today...

I just looked through all the boat pamphlets that I picked up at the last show.
I went through some mini deliberations about another boat purchase, but
again decided that what I have will do fine. Adding smart tabs this year will
probably make for even improved performance overall.

Appreciation of what you have is actually a credit to the industry, especially
if what you have is 10, 20, or 30+ years old. If and when the time comes to
buy a new boat or motor, knowing what is on the market will optimize the
purchase. And if the newer ones have even more longevity than what we now
have, I know I won't have a need for another after a new purchase.

Enjoy the show! Maybe new next year, but every boat ride is a new ride!

:)
