I have a 1987 westerbeke wtw 6.5 that I am installing into my boat. Do I have to have a westerbeke remote start/instrument panel, or will other manufacturers panels work, onan etc...

Re: Westerbeke Remote Panel

I'm not 100% sure about Westerbeke, but when I installed a new Kohler generator the dealer told me the remote start panel was absolutely necessary if I wanted that ability. The only other option would be to have a custom panel made.

Looks like I will be building a remote panel, I don't think it will be worth $500.00 for a new one. If I find a used one then that will be even better. IF I have to build one, the gauges shouldn't be anything special should they....normally a water temp, oil temp, and voltmeter......?

I was hoping for an aftermarket source for one at a reasonable price.

thanks

As I recall, the Westerbeke panels I've seen had water temp, oil PRESSURE (not oil temp), and an hour meter. If you're building your own, more gauges are always better.

My Kohler remote start panel is quite basic- no gauges at all- just a momentary toggle switch and hour meter. And they charged me something like $200 for it. The computer on the generator monitors all the functions and will automatically shut it down if something's not right. There's a LED display that scrolls any fault codes. They offered an optional remote LED display but I didn't even consider it because of the price.

Your right Arks, my bad it is an oil pressure.

The panel for this one has an ON, Start and Stop toggles and the previous mentioned gauges. I am figuring that it can't be that hard to find the toggles and gauges.

Our 1990 12.5kw westerbeke only has the hour meter on the control panel.
