I have a 1980 Merc 175 V-6 Serial #5541133 with WH-13 carbs. Are any other WH carbs interchangable? Thanks.
You will probably need to change all 3 carbs....
What are you trying to do as that is the 2.0 liter 175 and it putting out all the hp it can now?
Finally, I got the Merc Service Manual today. The lower the WH #, the older the carb. So my WH-13 carbs are pretty old. It does not list compatibility for a swap out. Here's what I'm trying to do... I would like to get a three pack of carbs to rebuild while I use the factory installed WH-13's. If I have a failure on the rebuilds, I can put the Wh-13's back on to use the boat during our short high altitude season. I just cannot find any information regarding the spec changes in the various WH carbs.
If you have done auto 2 barrels, then you'll do these with your eyes shut. Very simple carb in design, easy to strip and clean, and difficult to break....
About jetting for altitude... My Merc service manual says 2500'-5000' should have 0.002" smaller than standard on all jets (Main, vent, idle) and 5000'-7500' should be 0.004" smaller than standard on all jets. I guess that just means leaving them standard will have you running richer, not necessarily a bad thing....![]()
Have fun...
Chris..........
...My book shows for 5000 ft .004 smaller on Main and Vent and .004 larger on Idle.....
There's a couple of ways around changing jets at high altitude. I never do it either. I drop 2" of prop pitch and run regular gas instead of super. I just came back from a high desert fishing trip and my rpms were down 400 but my top speed stayed about the same. Gotta love thin air
Regarding your floats. There's two per carb and they are no longer available through merc. Even if you don't need them now, if you find them, buy them. I expect that GLM will probably pick up the ball here at some point and start offering them. V6 Rod Bearings went the same route but GLM picked them up. You might be able to get them through www.promarineusa.com.. The website has been down for a while and now their phones are messed up so I'm not sure what their future is but if you go to the link above you can download their catalog and call the order in or email it.
