What 15 carb fits my 9.9?

I recently purchased a 1990 9.9 E10RESC. I got it fairly cheap, and while the carb needs a rebuild, I figured I might do the 15 carb swap. I am getting mixed information from different parts dealers so I figured I’d ask in here. I am being told that I must get a 1990 15 carb ONLY and no other year will fit my 9.9. Can any shed any light for me?

Im 99.9% sure it does not have to be a 1990 15hp carb..any 15hp carb will work as long as the intake hole where you mount the carb to is the same diameter as the throat on the back of the carb...

I thought so. I am able to pick up an 86 15hp carb already rebuilt for a good price
Went that route, converted a 96 Evi 9.9RED to a 15RED, besides the carb swap also had to swap the 15 Leaf Plate Assembly or Reed Valves. Their internal fuel passages are bit wider than the 9.9 ones so to stand more fuel intake from the 15 carb.

I wonder if it would be the same for pre 1990 models. I’ve seen posts and videos of guys claiming to just swap the carb out and good to go

Can swap just the carb and will be good to go, but the correct upgrade involved both parts, was a hint given to me by a guy that used to work for Evinrude Tech Department. Evinrude is a complicated Company to work with, has too many different year models to check them out to compare between them whereas Tohatsu is a piece of cake with wipped cream and a cherry on top. LOL!!

Besides couldn't find info if the motor needed slight more time advance to compensate the extra fuel going in. Which in other motor brands needs so.

Would you not recommend doing the swap?

Sorry, hard to tell, there's too many 9.9 and 15 HP models from that year to check them all. If the carb is cheap try it and check if worked out. Would be good to make a GPS test lightly loaded on flat calm water cond when at 9.9 and 15 HP at full throttle and check how much the top speed has been increased. If same the carb swap alone didn't worked out.

Good idea!
You could buy the offered 15 carb and tell the seller that if doesn't work as expected will be sent back along collecting the money payed for.

If doing the test report the max speed achieved with both carbs with current prop and equal distance runs.

‘74 - ‘87 are all metal carbs and should bolt right up. May need longer air silencer box mounting bolts (2). ‘88-‘92 will bolt right up. ‘93+ have a different choke linkage and will not fit correctly. I have done a few of these conversions (carb only), my 14’ (25hp max rated) went from 18 to 21 mph. Not a huge deal on my boat. If your 9.9 doesn’t quite plane your boat, the 15 carb swap can be a game changer for you. Good luck!
