what? 20:1 air/fuel ratio?

I was looking for a honda engine and found on one of their site they claim to have a lean burn control that can have as lean as 20: 1 mixture. looking through the web, found one for Honda that claims 22:1 mixture. What is different to allow this? is it at certian conditions only like idling?

please educate me, I'm intrigued

One way to do that is with a stratified charge, in which there is a normal 14:1 mix near the spark plug but leaner farther away. That can be done with fuel injector geometry and timing. It works best with direct injection, but has been done with plain jane EFI.

The stratified charge strategy doesn't utilize the full engine displacement, so it must be used at idle or reduced power cruise.

I don't know if that is how Honda does it, but that is one way it is possible.

I read up on it a bit last night, doesnt seem to be worth the hassle, saves 12-15% overal fueleconomy and sounds like a good way to melt a piston
