What are my options?

I have a 1998 Combo 60HP mercury engine attached to a 16ft fletcher cruisette only used for 2 summers from new and always stored in garage when I got a oil blockage.

Stripped the engine down and the pistons are scored badly and two of the bores are scored. Left it in the garage in boxes having already brought all new bearings , rings , gaskets and brought a new boat.

Time has come to repair it or sell the boat without an engine. What can I do with the bores, do I have to buy a new block? or can the liners be replaced? or should I just throw it all in the bin and sell the boat as boat only.

Any ideas? I enjoy the learning process / challenge of repairing an engine just stumped on what to do with the scored bores.

Regards

Chris

Re: What are my options?

Chris, It is likely that the bad cylinders can be rebored. Normally new oversize pistons and rings are used for the rebored cylinders only, and these are usually provided to the machine shop(at their request) to use as a guide for the reboring process.
It sounds to me like you should repair this motor.

Chris, repair this motor, but you need to find the route of this problem. Being stored or not used frequently leads me to believe your problem was a result of gummed up carbs. I am guessing this cause your engine to run "lean" on the air/fuel mixture resulting in wear on the pistons and cylinders.
