Re: What are the best spark plugs to buy?

The one recommended by the engine manufacturer. A spark plug is a spark plug. All you can do with gas is burn it. Different tip plugs do nothing but extend the life out, and then not much. Get the plug thats supposed to be in it. Don't try to re engineer the combustion process. The manufacturer spent gobs of money paying people to give you the exact plug number you needed for best performance. Don't alter from that.

I agree on the heat range part what the others are saying. But i like NGK plugs in all my engines. Just never had any problems with them.

NGK are probably the best brand for reliability, AC is a close second.

Bosch and Champion will misfire and set CEL's on certain vehicles. I wouldn't recommend either for anything.

Bosch and Champions are the correct plugs to use in engines designed for Bosch and Champion plugs. NGKs for. . . .you get the message.

Any make plug may misfire when applied incorrectly or getting insufficient signal.

I really doubt that you have anything other than gossip and/or urban legend to support your claim, 642mx.

Experience has proven (mine), that more often than not, the advice given by several above is the most sage.

I've worked in a couple independant auto repair shops and one Ford dealership. I could go on and on about each vehicle I've worked on thats had a misfire (because of Bosch or Champion plugs) but I don't have that kind of time so you'll just have to trust me when I say not to use Champion or Bosch. :D

I run Champion (not platinum) and have never had a problem with them, and I run them for 100,000++ miles! I will have to agree on bosh, put them in an engine once, it would not hit at all, no spit pop or sputter.

I have a 89 mariner 75HP 3cyl. I use NGK's or Champions, both brands work just as good, at times i may even use 2 NGK's and one Champion, or vice versa. It don't make no difference with that motor, it starts and runs without as much as a hiccup.

AC and Champion are the same company ...the advise above about what the makers used in it orginally is the best way to go unless you have modifed your engine

It gets complex as the goal is to ignite the kernel at the correct time

So i go OEM as i have no abilty to see if a different one does it better or worse

Last time I checked, AC was owned by GM and Champion was owned by Federal Mogul.....

All depends on what it is going in. Autolite in Ford products, Champion in Chrysler (both are junk, so it's fitting), Bosch in German cars (junk on both accounts as well), AC in General Motors, NGK in Jap cars, E3 in small engines.

I use NGK in my Mercury outboards and outdoor equipment, GM in my Chevys, Champion in my Farmalls (this is all I can find for 'em), and Autolite in my Dodge p/u.
I was a mechanic for 13 years until I discovered how to polish a chair!

Re: What are the best spark plugs to buy?

You're all wrong. ;)

There is a better spark plug- I'm running these in my snowmobile and they're the best plug I've ever run.

I have a race sled. It's high compression and takes a beating. Under normal use I burn out (and foul out) NGK's in about 100 miles or less.

I bought these at the start of last season and rode them 3000+ miles over the winter without a single foul out.

There is a catch...they were $30 each. At this point they were well worth the money because I would have cooked $70 worth of NGKs during the winter- thus, a $10 savings so far- I'm going to run them until they puke this year and see how much abuse they can take.

I can't afford to put them in my truck (over $200) but so far these things are terrific.

Re: What are the best spark plugs to buy?

I guess I'm old school, but I've always had any engine run stronger with an equivalent Champion plug. It might be because they are usually a projected nose core.

Those Pulstar plugs look good, but they are quite expensive!
