no malice or sarcasm was meant by my use of the word awesome. :D
I didn't take it that way, but I did intend just a little sarcasm . . . :D

My first boat was a tri hull, 15 footer with a 45hp outboard. now we have a Sea Ray 215 EC with a 5.0 mercruiser i/o. Its like night and day. The bigger heavier boat give us a much smoother ride. Mostly in the intercoastal waterway of south florida. The later takes much longer to clean after use but its well worth it.

So you tested four boats and based off of that you called someone Edit: confused? I guess Edit: that explains it (now you guys are testing my ability to maintain the intent of a post while removing the testosterone  :p QC)

QC,
lol
Good job on bringing this thread back to a semi normal one. I will do my best to not get any other post of mine edited.

my only comment is that depending on the style of tri hull, the ride can be even worse than has been suggested so far.... our family had a 15' trihull with 60hp when I was a youngin'... small lake or not.... running into ripples of even a few inches would cause a rough, rattling, uncomfortable ride. That, and on our boat the big/deep outside chines would cause bad cavitation issues when the cornering was anything beyond moderate.

I now have several boats of my own, but would never consider buying a trihull based on how ours handled. Maybe there are/were good trihull designs, but ours was awful. We didn't realize how bad it was until after we got rid of it.

Wow. I go to the lake for a spin on this great fall day in S.C., come back and the thread has doubled in size, as well as editing of words and a personal visit by a Moderator.

Okay.

I figure he called me an "idiot" because he out ranks me. He's a Petty Officer First Class and I'm a Cadet/Cadet. LOL. Marines know this.

I think he thought I was insulting the worth of old tri-hulls. I'm not.

I think old tri-hulls would make very good fishing boats.

BTW, being called an "idiot" is mild compared to what I've been called on the six or seven political forums I've been banned from.

Forum posting is two dimensional. It lacks other dimensions. It's very easy to call someone "an idiot" and get away with it.

No sweat. These things go with the territory.

Back to th topic: the comments have been informative and hopefully help a potential boater to find the right boat. Thanks.

I think I was having more fun than anything . . . Oh, we had our Political Period . . . It was allowed in Dockside and I was a pre-Mod participant. The owners want this forum as civil as possible, so we try and keep a fairly tight reign without destroying context. That was what I was having fun playing with, but there were "confused" quotes coming in while I was editing out "idiot" . . . :D

Sorry mods, wasn't trying to be offensive to the "confused" poster. It just irritated me that someone could make such an innane comment about a boat based on it's design. I didn't think the thread had run off course other than a few comments about my name-calling. I'll make future attempt more subtle when berating another poster for making one-off comments, I make my own enough anyway. :)

Wow coming along after this thread is really confusing - but most playground fights are anyway.

So, in an effort to add value - I agree with the assertion that trihulls are definitely different from v-hulls. There. :D

Yep, that was covered int he first several posts. But, after all of the HUBBUB, it was worth repeating for those short minded types that get off track really easy...

Re: What are the Merits of the Tri-hull -vs- Vee-Hull?

What wasn't mentioned here was the intended use and purpose of both tri-hulls and bass boats, originally tri-hulls were marketed for the INSHORE & LAKE boater..small or no wave chop, more passenger load and not for speed . Bass boats are the same, tons of power to get to the fishing hole quick, low freeboard for retrieving the catch, wide deck for ease of casting, NOT intended for chop at all. With that in mind why would anyone criticize something that was never intended for a specific use? would you criticize a Cadillac for not being able to go 4 wheeling?

I would, those Caddy Escalades and EXT's are pieces of crap for offroading! lol. :)

We have a 23 Ft. deckboat, and I guess its a form of a tri-hull. It handles lake chop extremely well at plane, it may be the size of the boat that helps also. Its a FourWinns Funship.:)

I was running 53 mph in very light chop with our Starcraft deckboat the other day. But, put it in anything more than light chop and it will loosen fillings and compress your spinal column.

Our deckboat is still a lot of fun, but I would never brag about the ride in the chop. I'll stick to my v-bottom for that discussion.

I know this thread has been dead a while. However I feel like I should put my two inexperienced cents in. I have a 17-18' trihull and I really don't think it rides that bad.

My boat has a 188hp I/O. It seems when someone complaining about the ride and they actually does state the power of the boat in question that it seems underpowered. For instance one person in this thread was talking about 60hp trihull. That probably wouldn't even be enough power to get my boat on plane.

At slower speeds, say around 18-20mph, it does beat you up but around 22-25 is smooth. That's the best cruising speed. Top speed is around 43mph. Even at max speed it's no worse, probably better, than a previous co workers bass boat at 45.

I think being an I/O helps with ride also. The heavier motor helps keep the bow up better. It would interesting to me to see a comparison of opinions on trihulls with all the data about the boat they have experience with e.g. length, engine size and style, planning speed and max speed.

In the end I think difernces are: Trihull handles better. Trihulls have more bow space. Deep V's ride better. Modified V's get a little bit of the handling and a little of the ride quality. V's look better. I believe due to the flat nature of a trihull that it probably can operate in less water also.
