Hi all

I have this boat i am buying. been neglected for over a year sitting in salt water.
from the pictures, can you tell me what are the basic things the boat needs? not to be a beauty but to be safe and perform well.

Some told me not to buy this, but I can't understand if due to unfixable condition or because it is old and not good looking. anyway, I dont need it to be a beauty. I am ready to work on it to be better, if possible.

probably I have adressed this question in other forum but after finding this forum it is more relevant.

many thanks for the help. I am new to boating and also to this forum. please try to be specific so I can understand you and then be able to decide if that is something i can live with it and fix or run away from this boat.

also, I cannot afford better than that...

Ayuh,.... Due to the way Whalers are built, once the foam gets Wet, it's pretty much junk....

'n that 1s lookin' awfully Low in the water, which would indicate the foam Is in fact quite Wet...

though it is a copycat not a real one. it has a bilge as well so not expecting that much foam as in original whalers. looking at boat from behind it is symetric. looking below water don't see large area sinking. I think it is its design looking that way. question is: is there external signs indicating humidity inside?

Not worth buying, so don't buy it.

You mentioned that you cannot afford more money than this boat . . . but in order to fix it up, it will cost money, and perhaps more money than a boat in better condition would cost.

So, you cannot be boating reliably and safely for the cost of this boat alone.

The good thing about buying a neglected/rotten boat is you don't have to shell out a bunch of money up front, you can dry dock it and work on it as you get money for the materials.

Just take the gasoline money you'd be putting into a better/more expensive boat and set it aside for materials.

You didn't say how much you paid, if it has a trailer, what the motor condition is like. If you paid very little than it may be worth investing funds to make it safe and enjoyable. Boat are very costly to keep in good running order, and most don't see that going into the first one. You may be able to part that boat out and make enough to buy what you want, but only you can decide that.

o.k. so, the package of the boat will cost me about 3100$ (here in Israel).
Package includes:
parking spot in marine (worth 1000$)
the boat itself-worth lets say 1500$ with the throteller and metals on the boat.
the motor, tomorrow will check it thoroughly but it should be good according to previous check by an expert afriend of mine. (worth about 3000$= the price of the whole package)
no trailer-as it is in the marine. later on I am planning on getting a trailer so i can go fishing in different areas.
a package like this here with boat in a better condition will cost at least 6500$ (about double price) if i am lucky to find one (small country, no much boats and no as keen with boats as other places!).

So, top buy a betetr one i will need to pay 3500$ more. I was told by someone deals with boat repairing that it will cost me about 1500$ to replace the floor and antifouling. in case this is the only thing needed then it is still worth it, but I am not expert.

in addition, I want to repair it by myself. I am enthusiastic to do it (will be first time) and I will seek help here and from friends.

question is: according to your calculations (in usa), how much will cost the materials for floor replacement and antifouling (only materials).

for other things needed for the boat, I guess i have to raise the boat from water to see the hull, see the stern condition-digging holes to see where is rotten wood...and then I can knowhow large is my project. right?

Re: what basic restorations needed?

You may be lucky and your boat might be put together like this one:

http://forums.iboats.com/boat-resto...repair/center-console-deck-repair-587371.html

It'll take work, time ,and money to fix it... but will be well worth it in the end.

many thanks for this link. really fantastic job the man did, and your guidance is really supportive!
I am thinking the same as ahmincha. not worrying about succeeding or not, not a question, but I am working on better understanding all the phrases and terms in english, specially for boats-something new to me! but that I will cope with in a short time and hard studies :)

hope you are ready to stand by me through the process (will probably be in summer=may).

My best advice to you Sameh is to read and study in this forum if you're really serious about this project. If you're interested, you should sit back and watch and study the other people doing their restorations and you'll learn a lot before you even start your project.

Read all of the threads here:

... and follow along with all of the threads going on in the main forum. Educate yourself through the study of this site and your restoration will go smoothly and you'll have fewer questions.

All the information you need to know is right here.
