Had my powerpack tested by my marina and it was found to be bad. Evinrude 175 1992 model. OIS 2000 powerpack. I am looking for some opinions on what brands you guys trust more. I can Buy from Bombardeir and from CDI, I can get warranties from both. I will hate to pay an arm and a leg but I will do it. I want to know from your experience which one should I buy ? Please help

Re: what brand of powerpack ?

I bought a Sierra. It seems some here have had bad luck with those. Mine has been fine though. It is on a '77 115. OEM would be best, but it seems with these things that a lot is luck. An expensive one might go bad within a month and a cheap one might last 10 years and vice versa. You would be smart to do some digging and see if there is another part that failed that caused the powerpack to go bad. It would suck to drop a bunch of cash on a new powerpack only to have it fail right away because of another problem.

The CDI unit is digital. The CDI unit is much preferred, hands down, no question.

Re: what brand of powerpack ?

OK, Finding another root cause would be good but I don't know what to look for. The marina ran my motor and it went dead, they put their good test powerpack on it and let it run for 30 minutes. They then put my old one back on, fired it up, and it died within 5 minutes. I have now had 2 OEM powerpacks go bad. My mechanic did not specify any other problems that it could be. The OEM part from Bombardeir is $348.00 the CDI from this website is $ 206.00. I like the lower price but I don't want to make a mistake. What should I look for as a powerpack failure cause , what other part would make it fail ? Thanks.

Old age? They are 17 years old. Go with the CDI. While you have everything disconnected, test the stator and trigger according to your manual.
