Titanium or Inconel (SP) plating. Nasty stuff, though it may be a bit pricey and tough to work with. ;);):)

Neither one of those materials would stop anything. Pure titanium is so soft it that it doesn't even register on the Rockwell C scale. Inconel isn't much better. You would be better off using a common HSLA steel.

Re: What can stop a sawzaw?

oh, a 40 caliber comes to mind.....45 is fairly proficient too but kicks like a mule, I bet even a 38 could get it done. To be completely honest we use sawzalls everyday at work, I don't know anything that can stop them with the right blade, I have used them to cut 1/2" plate steel. They will take a transom out in about 2 minutes I'll bet and Like I said the only thing that I think will stop them from steeling my motor is me......or my dog.

IMO, the 38 kicks worse than the 40. The 40 kicks worse than the 45. I shouldnt say kick, because it's more like snap. The 45 is more like a long push.

Obviously, it's going to depend on firearm, but the generally, the description will fit.

The cloth idea doesnt really make sense to me, because if it's on the outside. What's to stop the person from using shears or something alike to just cut the cloth?

I have the solution...

Inboard motors. :D If they cut the transom and park underneath it, they are getting a bed full of fiberglass and wood!

Dont confuse hardness with toughness. May be soft but do not machine/cut well with conventional HSS, tool steel or even cobalt. Both materials will eat any readily available sawzall blades.

A 5 gallon jug of horse ****, with bilge pump(s) re-utilized and connected to the battery via a motion detector.
Along with some plastic tubing and directional lawn sprinkler heads.

I know this has been brought up once already but I would think chains would take some time to cut through. Multiple small chains. I'm not sure what to connect the other end of the chains to however.

That chap material wouldn't stop the saw but I'd bet it would be really hard to cut through.

Re: What can stop a sawzaw?

You can try to slow them down but a sawzall WILL cut through almost anything.

I own a remodeling company and Ive used sawzalls to cut just about everything. Chain, 3/4" threaded rod, old steel and old iron conduit, just about everything.

Hell firefighters even use them to cut people out of stick situations like vehicles. The "rescue" blades they sell at hardware stores are some of the best for all around cut the crap out of almost anything with the same blade.....

But if you have the specific blades for what your cutting theres not much that can stop you short of a bullet to the head.

Build the entire transom out of 2" solid aluminum, they won't be hacking through it in 15 minutes.

There might be a slight problem with the boat sitting level though....

Re: What can stop a sawzaw?

The most annoying (to a thief) and hardest to cut is fine-stranded stainless aircraft cable. That stuff will destroy most cutting tools (except a torch) and is way to flexible to cut easily. It is also light and relatively cheap. Any aircraft mechanic or shop could make you up a cable with an eye on each end for only a few dollars.

Just like anything else, the right tool will cut it. Aircraft cable is easily cut with.... what else but..... a cable cutter. I cut that stuff all the time and with the right tool it isn't hard to cut at all.

As for a sawzall, it will cut it too without much trouble if stabilized and a fine tooth bi-metal blade used. I have cut it that way too and it isn't that tough.

Best thing to do is to insure it.

That's my point - very few people have the right tool to cut small aircraft cable and not much else will work. It is not the kind of tool a mobile thief is likely to be carrying.

Re: What can stop a sawzaw?

Lot of interesting suggestions here. How about adding: make the motor (assuming outboard) difficult to get at. Park the trailer with the engine up against the house, garage, tree, another vehicle, etc and inmobilize the trailer. Put it up on blocks, take wheels off, chain it, etc. Make it so there's no room to work or manuver the engine without a lot more work for the thief. If I owned a marina & stored boats on trailers, they'd be parked transom to transom.

Re: What can stop a sawzaw?

I can personally attest to the affectivness of the chainsaw chaps. If I were not wearing them I would only have one leg or be dead.
I was clearing a roadway that was grown in with lots of 1-3 inch diameter trees. Holding the 36 inch barred stihl 044 magnum at full throttle ( which is about 14-15000 rpm) and sort of swinging it back and forth. The trees were falling all over me. I guess the tip of the bar caught a little tree and kicked back across my left leg. I thought it was a tree that snapped loose and hit me it felt like someone hit me with a bat. I thought the saw was stuck in a little tree so I pulled and pushed hard and jabbed the skaggs into my leg. Only then did I look down and see the chaps and start shaking. The saw was all bound up with the kevlar strands. I ended up with a big bruise and two puncture wounds on my leg but I still have my leg! Ironicly that was the first time I put the chaps on and I had been working in the woods for ten years logging. I no longer work in the third most dangerous job in the world! Just my experience with the chaps.

A cheap coil of LEAD used for valley flashing on roofs. Clogs the teeth of the blade real fast. Just a thought.

Well in these parts the thiefs have the sawsall and bolt or cable cutters too. They saw or cut thro everything.

A sawzall will not cut thru heat treated tool steel unless they make a carbide blade for one, which I have never seen.

Re: What can stop a sawzaw?

Depending on how heat treated tool steel is implemented I would think a hammer would break it up pretty easily. As we all know harder generally equals more brittle.

I'm not discounting your input, just responding.

P.S. I have a tungsten carbide wedding ring. It is almost as hard as a diamond and has a permanantly polished surface that I have yet to figure out what will scratch. I've even punched/ran the ring across cinder blocks with no scratches.

The big knock on these rings is that you can not cut them off if there was ever an emergency. A little research and I learned that you can snap them pretty easily with a pair of vice grips which is easier than cutting through a gold ring (at least while it is still on your finger).
