well i have been really wanting to put my 1961 mercury 500 on my 15foot orlando clipper. slight problem... i have to drilll

there are bolts already in the transom. currently they are 6 inches apart.... the mercury's spot is 8 inches apart. i thought at first that i just did not have to bolt the motor up but i was wrong. this motor has much more torque therefore needs to bolted as well as clamped to the transom for extra safety.

so my plan/solution is to get new bolts in the 6inch apart holes because for some reason they extend out about 1/4-3/8 of an inch. so i will put new bolts in with a washer and silicone to seal it up.

then after i finish that up i will mount the mercury and drill hole into the metal and transom where the bolts should be for that motor. then get right size bolts and seal them up with silicone. what do you guys think? any tips.

I'd use 4200/5200 or PL premium instead of silicone. Should be very easy, the holes are above the waterline anyways, so there's not many ways to mess up and it shouldn't take more than a few hours.

Forget the silicone. It has no place on a boat.

Only use 3m 4200 or 5200 as stated above. Silicone will fail.

Re: what did i get myself into?!?!

ya dont use silicone. it belongs in bathrooms, not boats. it will degrade over time, especially with constant uv exposure. use 3m 5200 sealant and some bolts.

Epoxy some hardwood dowles into the old holes, this will help maintain the strength of the transom

Because I am not "on air" like you are!! :D

actually not till 9am. from 530 to 9 i just pretend to be working.

i dont think strength would be the issue. in reality anything to act as a filler can be put in there... but the key is getting a watertight seal on the outsides.

I agree with ENSING, use some wooden dowels and 3M 4200 not for the strength but for sealing. My concern about the bolts are they will stick out as you said, this will not let you?re other motor mount flush. And the 4200 is a good sealer, just cut the dowels so that you have approximately 1/4? on either side of the transom. Coat the dowel with the 4200 before you put them in, after it is in place fill both sides with the 4200.

I switched motors on my Arima and just filled the holes with the 4200, it remains pliable and is very tough. I later switched back to my original motor and had to use a drill to get the 4200 out of the holes.

You can remove the 3M 4200 sealant later if you need to...the 5200 is darn near permanent. You can 4200 at Wally world. Be sure and post some pix of the clipper with the Merc on it...hopefully at WOT.

Re: what did i get myself into?!?!

ok i stopped by napa and they have to order some 3M 4200 in a 3oz tube for 11.99!!!!! could you guys recommend a cheaper brand????? haha

ok today i got the clamps on my mercury unseized and all the bolts holding it onto the old boat. all i need is another strong person then we can carry it.

for now i will get those new bolts in. i will take the old ones out. i want to put new bolts that are more flush with the transom instead of wooden dowels. i am going for strength instead. i will seal it with the 4200 compound so it should be fine?

then put the mercury on and troll back to the lift. then drill hole into boat where the mounts are for the mercury. then use bolts and seal it up too with 4200 sealant.

is 3oz of the 4200 stuff going to be enough to seal 4 bolts?

how fast you think i can go with a 50hp rated at powerhead motor? it goes pretty fast with the 35hp johnson. even with 2 people roughly 120-135 each.

Re: what did i get myself into?!?!

a 50 on a 15' glass boat should be fairly decent... 25-30ish. my 14' tri hull with a 50 merc and a waterlogged transom/deck/stringers/foam hit 30 with 4 adults.

Re: what did i get myself into?!?!

Just a guess, but I would say 30 plus. I had a 50 on my 15' Arima (glass boat) weighed 900 pounds, you're boat should be about a third of that. The Arima would run around 22, 23 with the wife, me and fishing gear and the 50 wasn't running right. I put a 90 on it and would run around 40.

I buy 3M4200 at home depot, its a LOT cheaper.
Push the threaded end of the bolt in, then smear the sealant on the flat shaft area and slide the bolt in, slide it back out an inch and apply more.
Don't over-do it and don't forget the washers the first time.:p

Re: what did i get myself into?!?!

ok thats good. today i will take old bolts off and get replacement ones then at homedepot i will get the sealant.

yeah it is a very light boat. i mean i probably get like 26-28mph with the 35hp! i am guessing 31-33 with the 50hp sounds good to me:D

haha yeah thank god you told me about the washers cause i probably would forget too.

thanks for the instructions:D

the box saids to use all of it within 48 hours even if i close it back up! ugh so yeah... i will put the new bolts on then put the mercury on then remove and drill new holes then seal and install

....wait 24hours....

WOT test run
