Motor has been sitting for a year and a half. I pumped out the old gas and install a new sending unit. I hooked up to the muffs and ran it. It ran fine, except when rev it too high it stay rev up. But I was told it was because of no back pressure and shouldn't do it. I've been told to clean the carburetor, change the lower unit oil, replace the water pump impeller!!!

What else should I do before I take it for a spin?

Yeah but it seems like it takes days to get responses. Rain is delaying,Weekend is creeping up and I'm getting impatient... :(

Impatience kills outboards. Don't rev outboards out of the water. That kills outboards. Look for water being pumped. No water being pumped kills outboards.

When you come to iboats, say what year, model, and horsepower your outboard is. That helps save outboards. Not giving that information keeps many people from writing answers to your questions.

If it runs OK, and there's water pumping, take it out and run it. It's probably fine.

Telling people my model, year, horsepower of my outboard is not going to change the question at hand.

This could regard to any type of outboard thats been sitting for a year and a half or more.. Its just something that I needed to know!

I wanted to make sure that I cover about as much as I can before I take it out. There's no harm in that.

PEACE!

if people know the year and hp, they are more likely to respond, especialy if they have the same or very similar motor. some motors are more prone to certain repairs also, so it really does make all the difference. another issue is that this topic comes up quite often, and can be searched for.

But... we are here to help, I first came here for help myself.

If it has sat for over one an a half years, I would absolutely do the following, no questions asked, regardless of how well you think it runs out of water.

1) clean and rebuild carbs. cheap parts, easy labor. soak them and spray them with compressed air to blow out the crap in them. twice or three times if needed, then rebuild with new rebuild kits.

2) impeller change. regardless of how much it looks like it's pumping on land at low rpms. that is no indication of how long it will hold up during use. the rubber gets hard and cracks.

3) compression check. for peace of mind.

4) de-carb (sea foam, etc) and after that, new spark plugs.

5) change lower unit oil.

6) check all wiring for cracks.

7) make sure your overheat alarm on the control unit works. (check manual for test procedure.)

best way to kill an outboard is to rev it out of water, and run an old impeller.

I forgot a very important on that is obviously to late, but remove the spark plugs and lube up the cylinder walls and had turn the motor. if it happened that the carbs were cloged, and you sat there cranking it to start, you could easily score the cylinders and loose compression. I've done it to a bike once...

check that other link to see what I missed.
