Re: what do I need to do? Motor have been sitting for 1 1/2 year
if people know the year and hp, they are more likely to respond, especialy if they have the same or very similar motor. some motors are more prone to certain repairs also, so it really does make all the difference. another issue is that this topic comes up quite often, and can be searched for.

But... we are here to help, I first came here for help myself.

If it has sat for over one an a half years, I would absolutely do the following, no questions asked, regardless of how well you think it runs out of water.

1) clean and rebuild carbs. cheap parts, easy labor. soak them and spray them with compressed air to blow out the crap in them. twice or three times if needed, then rebuild with new rebuild kits.

2) impeller change. regardless of how much it looks like it's pumping on land at low rpms. that is no indication of how long it will hold up during use. the rubber gets hard and cracks.

3) compression check. for peace of mind.

4) de-carb (sea foam, etc) and after that, new spark plugs.

5) change lower unit oil.

6) check all wiring for cracks.

7) make sure your overheat alarm on the control unit works. (check manual for test procedure.)

best way to kill an outboard is to rev it out of water, and run an old impeller.
