What else to do when motor is out?

Since my motor is out and HOPEFULLY I'll be swapping in a new one next weekend, what else (if anything) should I change while the motor and outdrive are out?

I'm already going to have a oil drain installed.

Do I need to replace the gimbal bearing, u-joints, or anything else? What would be the rough cost on the gimbal and the u-joints if I were going to replace them?

If the bearing and U-joints feel smooth thats kind of one of those deals where you got to decide is it in the budget right now.The bellows i would replace and grease everything up at least.
Good luck with the engine install..:)

Anything and everything that is hard or impossible to get to with the engine in. Bilge pumps and hoses, wiring down low, paint the bilge, clean everything, what's under the decks?

I recently bought a "kit" from ebay w/ all bellows, gasket set, gimbal bearing, water hose and 2 u-joints $98.99 total w/ shipping. That's a low end price I guess.

Wow, that is low end price, I paid almost that just for the main drive shaft bellow from Mercury.. Seems a good price but I hope they are reasonable quality, you don't want to be changing the bellows very often if you can help it..

I paid $85 for all but the ujoints - it was a GLM kit and bearing

That's good guys, but he want to know what to do with the ENGINE out, not the outdrive. The bellows and ujoints can all be done without pulling the engine.

Re: What else to do when motor is out?

Are you replacing it with the same exact motor? If so, I would take off the exhaust pipe, & flange, and check the (exhaust baffle, or butterfly not sure of what it's called?) to make sure it's there, and in good shape. Then put the flanged pipe back together carefully, so there's no leaks.

If you're changing to a V6, or V8, you must change this part, for an exhaust Y pipe, to fit twin exhaust headers.

It's called an exhaust shutter and commenly known as a flapper. On his model it's at the top of the exhaust tube, not at the bottom. That was on the older 1 drives.

Would that be what this is?:

I think this is what it SHOULD look like:

I found it in the lower unit when changing my impeller.

Is this an easy part to replace?

That's it! I'm only familiar with the old type 1 drives, as that's all I've had previously, but, I thought it was a good useful idea! while the motors out,
apparently it was, because his looked shot, from what I could see.

Somewhere in this general area?

Take that "hose" (exhaust bellows assembly) off of that "metal pipe" (laymen's terms:)) (y-pipe) and the bracket for the old exhaust shutter will probably still be hooked up in there right on top of the metal pipe. That's where the exhaust shutter is attached. Yours looks really similar to mine. I'd post a pic, but its too early on a Sunday morning. Those wires, TP/TS going through the transom assembly, do they look ok? Mine were falling apart and it might be a pain to fix yours after the motor is back in. In the process too of changing out both of the hydraulic hoses for the trim. One of mine went bad, so they're both getting replaced. If you ever want to get at them, you have to get to them underneath the gimbal assembly on the outside of the boat. Should be two bolts. Take those out, pull the connector down a few inches and then you can get to the other two bolts holding the hoses on. When I first looked back through that little hole from the inside, my first thought was, "how in the he$#??" But then looked it up in the manual and figured it out.

Sounds like the same guy. I just added the u-joints onto my order after the "auction" was over.

Just answering his question, is all.
