about 5 yrs. ago we bought all new appliances for
our kitchen. we didn't buy cheap, all whirlpool,
side/side with ice/water, top of line gas range
and dishwasher...
after 5 yrs of use, all 3 are falling apart and
are ready to be replaced! heck, my old beer fridge
in the barn is 20yrs old and in better shape than
my almost new one. what ever happened to pride of
quality in the top brand names?
maybe I'll just buy some old, well made appliances
this time instead of new.

Just like everything else MY, quality has gave way to quanity and the all mighty dollar.

As long as they can sell low quality items for top dollar, they will.

It's called greed.

Mellow, we replaced every major appliance in our house last year and ours were 7 years old.

They could make things last just like they could make automobiles last longer, be more energy efficient and less expensive.

Yea, it's just like anything that is good, they dis-continue it.

Brings to mind the 1693 Cat. engine made years ago.
It was indestructible and lasted for at least a million miles before any major work needed done.

yep, you guess it, they quit making it cause it was not breaking down enough to make any money from parts and repairs.

Its called planned obsolecence. Havent any of you guys seen "The Brave Little Toaster Goes to Mars"

Heard a quote once that went something like this;
Anybody can build an applience that will last forever the trick is to build one with a predictable lifespan.

When a salesman offers you an extended warranty he is actually is whispering in your ear that it won't last and you should cover yourself...

Ndmege, I had an 81 dodge with the venerable slant six, "leaning tower of power". Got 215K out of it before the body succumbed to cancer. Always, always, always started!

Re: what ever happened to quality?

Bare in mind that most new refrigerators have a fan motor and a condenser coil under the unit that requires more attention than the static condenser coils that on many earlier units was affixed to the back.It doesn't take long for dust to accumulate and effectively reduce the air flow and thus resulting in excessive compressor high side pressures which will eventually lead to its demise.I also have one of these models and need to dolly it outside at least once a year where I use the yard blower to remove all of the dust from the coils and fan unit. The vacuum cleaner attachment just won't reach all of the nooks and crannies.Mine is a Whirlpool that was purchased new in 1985 and is still going strong. My brother is on his third in the same time period.

I agree that the general quality of many things has declined and forces one to shop harder and wiser.

Re: what ever happened to quality?

the only appliance i've had trouble with is kenmore(whirlpool). i went through 3 kenmore dishwashers in 1 year before i finally broke down and bought a $650 bosch dishwasher that has been working nicely for the last 2 1/2 yrs. my washing machine & dryer are frigidaire and been going for six yrs now and still seem pretty strong. but i have to agree that quality is not what it used to be!

Re: what ever happened to quality?

The same thing is happening to the place I work for...

Our competitors can build a similar product cheaper and more efficient, but they are junk. They don't stand up near as well as ours.

The sad part of it is, people are paying for junk. They won't buy something once that will last a lifetime. They would rather buy a cheap one now, and replace it later.

You can get away with this if it's a one time project, like a putty knife you will use on a roof patch job or boat fiberglass job, but if you are going to be using it for a long time? Get a good one.

My Dad always picked up those cheap 1/4" electric drills, and I inevitably burned them up doing something or other. When I bought my own home and needed a drill, I bought a good Milwaukee drill...A drill for a lifetime. Yes it was expensive, but very well worth it.

Like my Granddad always told me:
Your cheap tool is your most expensive tool.

He's right!

H.

Re: what ever happened to quality?

You guys are just too funny. Conspiracy theories abound.

First, I've been inside many of the World's top companies, including one mentioned here (hint, Benton Harbor) and I've yet to find the person in charge of planned failure. In fact, many of these companies are obssessed with quality and are always busy implementing six sigma or ISO 9000 or some other quality program.

Second, companies make stuff that will sell. They can sell you a dryer that will last longer but people won't pay for them (like the Bosch mentioned) so they are busy trying to make the best product they can to hit a certain price point.

Third, if these companies are simply greedy, you should take a look at their financials! Companies like Wrilpool are lucky to make a profit.

Fourth, in order to keep costs low (as consumers demand) they have had to increase the amount of foriegn made compenents and assembly.

Fifth, it is a well dcomented fact that the quality of US built autos has increased significantly from the 70s Remember how in the 80s the Japaneese were running away with market share becuase the US makers were making junk? People were willing to pay for quality when it comes to auots (hence the steady price increases)

Lastly, take a look at the price of a dryer 30 years agian as a % of household income and take a look at that same number today. My gut tells me it has been reduced significantly.

If you want to know who is running these companies, working at these companies, making this stuff and making these decisions look in the mirror. It is rather average Americans who have often worked their way up the ranks at a compnay over a 30-year career.

H - you posted while I was typing my reply - you just validated what I was saying. These companies can't afford to not be price competitive especially on a product where the quality difference is difficult to see with the naked eye.

I am 70 years old, and I have owned an automobile, since I was 16 years old. Autos today are one thing, that are a heck of a lot better than they used to be, and will run many more miles with no trouble, or befor they need to be replaced. Naturally there are exceptions to the rule. :D :D :D :D
