where exactly is the tell-tale on this motor. is it the small diameter hose that exits to the right of the engine through the bottom plate?
i thought water was supposed to exit through the two holes on the back of the exhaust housing.

here is why i am asking. i just bought a motor that was not running. i replaced the left side coil packs, and starter. no it runs. however, i am new to evinrudes and want to make sure the water is circulating properly.

when i put my water muffs on and run the engine, there is water coming out from the hose that exits the lower right side of the engine. and when i pull the thermostat hoses, water is pumping out of the cylinder head.

basically, is this correct for this engine. i do not have thermosticks, so i dont know how hot the engine is running. i dont want to burn it up when i go out tomorrow.

long post i know, but thanks in advance for your help.

Cool I have the same motor well johnson 78 V4 140. Yes water is supposed to come out the line at the bottom of the crowl this is to let you easily see it when running across the water. When I buy a motor I replaced the water impeller along with a carb tune-up. Also Evinrude controls boxes have a built in warning horn well most. Try this turn key on, don't crank, on the top corner of each head should be a heat sensor. Follow the wire and should come to a black sleeve, pull this back careful and touch to the side of the motor (this will ground the switch as if the motor was too hot) the warning horn should sound do this for both sides.

Don't depend on these sensor, they just help, if you have to pull the head for some reason you will need to check these sensor. Water also exits from the other places you mentioned. sorry.
