Hola Manny...

1. You need a thermostat.
2. The impeller will bring water into your engine where it belongs. As long as the water hoses on your engine are good, you shouldnt get water in the boat by replacing your impeller (or "impella" as they call it in Florida).
3. Experience tells you if something is wrong. That, and a good service manual to check the components against. You can also post pictures of what you see when you open up the outdrive and we can help you. Otherwise, do you have any boat people in your neighborhood that can come and look and help you?

!Adios y buena suerte!

Re: what is a good running temperature

 hello every one i took my boat out last Sunday i have a 1996 23.5 Larson Hampton with a 5.7 mercruser i know-this after running at 30 mph my temperature was a bit hi in the gauge show running at normal speed at 180f when i give it some speed its running at 190f some times a bit higher if i slow down it go back to normal so i think can some one tell me what is the normal running temp

Boat engines don't operate quite like automobile engines with regards to the thermostat. Boat engine thermostat is a must. That being said, my ? is why was it removed in the first place? There was a reason and I suspect the PO removed it because the engine was heating up. The impeller is the heart of the entire cooling system. There wasn't enough water flow through the manifolds/risers do to low/non-existence water flow from the impeller and/or rust build up in the water jackets from saltwater.

A complete inspection of the cooling system is in order if you wish for semi-trouble free boating.

Make sure the idle speed is 750 or below. The drive is a dog clutch style, so don't let it ratchet when shifting. Shifting slowly is the worst thing you can do for your drive. Put it in gear from idle speed only, and shift it quickly and firmly. Should only have a single "Clunk" when it goes into gear.
