i'm thinking of making a legal residence in fl.
maybe just a po box.
the main reason is so that i don't get any state income tax taken out.
my buddy lives in orlando too.
then just tell usa truck that i am living there now, and to get me loads out of there.

you will seriously limit the number of companies you can drive for that way.
stay away from Swift and Werner. two who run in Florida. You're putting way too much thought into this. first get signed up at a school. you will get prehire offers from companies while there. some will reimburse the cost some won't. some that do will pay you less.
find out who has what equipment, who is going to press you to drive team. reefer is a thought but a lot of work and liability with frozen loads.
getting your CDL with another state as home of record will not be easy. if it was everyone would be a florida resident.
if you're interested CR England has an offer for rookie drivers who want to run reefer. looks to pay about what you're looking at.
If you go to the website I posted earlier they have information on almost every company out there and real opinions from people who have or are driving for them.

If I was going to be paid by the mile, I'd want to be on a Interstate in the west. Miles and miles @ 75 and relatively light traffic.

trucks are governed to 62 MPH usually no matter where you are

From Reno east on I80, lots of trucks doing 75 and better. Even Swiftys do about 65. Same on I5, I25, I70, I15, I40, I10, and I90, a few I've traveled this past year.

agreed...I was passed this mornning, and I was doing 70mph. As far as which interstate, I was on I-96 west bound.

None of our trucks are Governed to 62mph.... and we only have over 100 of em. ;)

Companys love drivers, who want to run.

Hauling freight is why they are in business.

Since you are single and have appear to have an opened mind, you'll do just fine.

Good luck.

Freight stinks in and out of FL, I am told. (TMC never sent me there in 12 mos).

You'll need to get your CDL in whatever state you are "residing" in. If you do go "home", unless there is a USA (or whatever) truck terminal nearby, you'll need to park your rig somewhere. In metropolitan areas, this means paying to park, maybe quite a bit. In sparser populated area you can usually find somwehere to park for free.

Re: what is a good starting pay for a new trucker?

SigSar......Do your food cost have to come out of your 11 bucks an hour? And who pays for your time when the truck is stopped at a weight station or being detained by the DOT?

Obviously you pay for your own food and such on the road.

My truck was never stopped or detained at a DOT weigh station I ALWAYS ran a legal log, and kept my truck in top notch condition.

Nothing in life is free and quite frankly if I were single with no obligations I would possibly even go do it again, I know quite a few people who "live" out of there truck and I had some experiences and saw some things I would have never seen otherwise.

I am greatfull for the opportunity that I had I made slightly more money than if I had sat and drawn unemployment (after being laid of from a sales job). Would I do it again not if I had any other choice. I got off of the road after the last time that I was lied too. After my excellent service record 99.8% on time delivery percentage I was awarded the priviledge of a good dedicated opportunity which was to last a minimum of 9 months, so for the first time in 9 months I was going to get to spend time with my family and see them on the weekends, not to mention that the pay was great even better than my sales job. After two weeks of doing the dedicated run they said no thanks we aren't going to do the dedicated run. I said forget it I am not going to watch my wife or son cry when I tell them this and I found a local temp job until I found my current sales position.

It is not a job it is 100% a lifestyle DO NOT LEASE PURCHASE A TRUCK. I REPEAT DO NOT LEASE PURCHASE A TRUCK EVER!!!!!!!!!!! You will lose on the deal, you will most likely make less money and repairs for a truck aren't cheap. $3500.00 for a full set of tires. $680.00 For a set of batteries.

I am just saying there is no shortage of drivers there never has been never will be. All companies basically say the same thing your dispatcher can promise you the moon and the stars but he gets to sleep in his own house every night.

Summer time driving easy as pie just set the cruise and go. Its sleeping that is the problem, as most states now have Anti Idle laws which prohibit you from idling the truck for Air conditioning ever tried to sleep in a temperature that is above 100 degrees with no A/c its basically like sleeping in an oven, and if the state doesn't have an antiidle law you can bet you will be getting all kinds of crap from your dispatcher about your idle time. Up to including write ups termination and remote disabling of your truck.

Winter time is a little different as ALL trucks are equipped with a bunk heater of some kind which will keep you nice and warm in the winter. Driving on the other hand sucks. Try digging a stuck bobtail rig out of a terminal parking lot with nothing but a claw hammer. KNOWING that if you have to call for a TOW you are going to be getting charged with a preventable accident (The last thing you want). Or getting one stuck on ice in an unsalted truck stop and once again digging the thing out with a shovel. Winter time SUCKS.

Moral of the last two paragraphs don't drive for anybody that doesn't have an APU on their trucks.

Or turning down a load that is 110 miles that will burn up three days of your time and knowing that there are several loads in the area, but now you have upset the dispatcher so they are going to let you sit and not give you a load at all you are damned if you do and damned if you don't.

All I am saying is don't commit to schooling with any one company Your schooling is not free you are going to pay for it. Take everything a recruiter tells you with a grain of salt. UNLESS they are going to guarantee you in writing 2500 miles per week it is a lie. If they will not put it in writing it is a lie automatically assume it.

My biggest three tips are:

Get it in writing if it isn't in writing it is a lie. The companies biggest excuse is driver's don't know how to manage their time or want to be lazy and lay around in a truck stop, that is bs.

Do not drive a truck without an APU or climacab system. It isn't about comfort it is about safety. Your equipment is your livelyhood you must maintain it properly, if it goes down your paycheck is GONE.

Re: what is a good starting pay for a new trucker?

Well, Sig paints kind of a grim picture. Unfortunately, it kind of mirrors my experience from about 30 years ago. Back then we didn't have GPS or cell phones. In fact, when I started driving, I didn't even have a credit card. I had to call my dispatcher and hope the lying, thieving piece of crap was willing to send me some cash via Western Union, which could take 4 hours or more. Then, of course, it would be deducted from my check along with the 10% Western Union fee.

Growing up, all I ever wanted to do was drive a semi. I dreamed about it. Never really wanted to do anything else. Finally got my shot in 1974 when I was 28 years old. Turned out that while I loved driving, I hated the life. Any dispatcher who doesn' t lie won't be a dispatcher for long. Any truck owner who doesn't steal from you won't be a truck owner for long. And if you own your own truck, who ya gonna steal from?

Honestly, even though I'm retired now, I still think about driving a truck. I think, well, heck, I could drive for them. It wouldn't be so bad. And the new rigs are impressive compared to the sleds I was driving.

For the last 23 years, I worked as a product engneer for a company manufacturing OEM auto components. The truckers hauling our stuff had a pretty good setup (IMO). Haul product from our plant to the car assembly plant, haul empty containers back. Generous transit times and GPS tracking. Schneider hauled a lot of our stuff. Drivers never touched the product, just dropped empties and hooked up to loads. When I drove, I laid fingers on pretty much every pound of freight I hauled.

Shhh. We don't mention them.

Lot lizards perform a very "vital function", the keep the driver's tension levels, from reaching a complete meltdown.

Brave souls, for sure.

Most that I saw I wouldn't considering touching with somebody else's equipment.

You really won't see them unless you are looking for them. Occasionally you would hear it on the CB Radio but that would be about it. Occasionally one would come up and knock on the window but after seeing my ugly face they usually just ran away

It is not as big of a problem as it used to be. JUST stay out of West Memphis my god in heaven that has got to be the crap hole of this country.

Re: what is a good starting pay for a new trucker?

I drove a small 1000 gallon gasoline tanker in city traffic for over 20 years. I was required to have every endorsement they offered on my CDL It was the most dangerous job there was in the school system of over 25 thousand employees . On 2 occasions my truck full of fuel was totaled in traffic accidents and one involved a fatality.............I happened to be taking the day off each time and the sub drivers paid the price not me. The boss thought I had some sort of carma protecting me....

Like everything in life, trucking is what you make of it. The most important thing to remember is keep your driving record clean(no accidents or tickets) As a safe driver it's easier to find work.
I did an independent CDL training school, then went over the road for 6 months. Then regional for another 6 months. The pay and home time were not great but I just wanted to get my experience.
With a clean driving record and 1 year experience is was able to get a good job as a car hauler. I make about 70k a year as a company driver(small company-10 trucks) I work mon thru fri with only 1 to 2 overnights. Miles are about 1500 to 2000 per week. We load and unlaod the cars so the miles are lower than a normal driving job. I've been doing it for 5 years and love it.
Good driving jobs are out there if you know where to look.
Good luck!

Let's see...1000 miles averaging 50 MPH is 20 hours. $260/20 hours is $13/hour. In-N-Out Burger pays $10/hour here with paid vacation and training doesn't cost a penny.

You nailed that one on the head and that's on a best day if you want to math nuts get stuck in traffic for say 45 min.s easy to do okay now you get caught in a scale there's another hour shot to hell so now that 13.00 an hour 10 hour day job just paid you around $8.00
