OK this may be a dumb question but I am an experienced boater who has always owned outboards but I recently purchased a boat with a 2002 4.3MPI Mercruiser. In the manuel it says open the seacock prior to starting but I can not find where it explains what a seacock is or where it is located.

Thanks for the help!

Re: what is a seacock?

It's a shutoff valve (sometimes a simple ball valve with a handle) for shutting off a thru-hull fitting. The valve is normally located on top of the thru-hull fitting so it can be shut off incase the hose breaks or maintenance on the system is being done. It prevents water from going any further than the valve.

Basically it's a valve in the bottom of the hull to let water in or out.

I`ll try to keep it clean.
A brass/bronze thru hull fitting equipped with a shut off valve. Commonly used on inboard and some I/O water inlet fittings, salt water washdowns, live wells, etc. Most I/O`s don`t have one. Some I/O`s use a engine mounted pump and heat exchanger and need the additional flow from the pump for cooling .On the smaller engines the water comes from the outdrive pump.
