Bought what I hope to be a beutifull old boat, or it will be after spit, polish and a few colorfull launguage lessons to anyone is earshot.

working on the engine but can't pin down exactly what it is, I was told by the previous owner it was a mericruser 302 and have found what I think is the serial number of the block, (D90E-6015-E3A) or a model number anyway. I know the starter needs replacing, and the plugs, and wires...and possibly the cap as well. there is a bolt on the underside that I might consider keeping.....

attached are the pictures I took, need to ID this powerplant and out drive.

thanks in advance.

Re: What is it.

its a volvo outdrive

as far as the motor, the casting number isn't gonna tell who the manufacturer is (besides ford or gm)

you need to find a mercruiser serial number or a volvo serial number to know for sure what you have for an engine

Post a picture of the engine, (not just the number, it means nothing). So far, you have a Volvo 270 outdrive, NOT Mercruiser. Have no idea what you have for an engine at this point.

Re: What is it.

It appears to be a Ford 302 to me. I think that casting number was used from 79 to 81 or 82. Also, from the looks of that light blue paint everywhere it most likely came out of a car or truck. (is the blue the base color and it was painted black or is it the other way around)? Does the alternator say Fomoco on it anywhere? It looks like an automotive piece, I've never seen a marine version of those. You are going to have to take the starter out to see what it is.

Well, you do have a Ford V8. But it's neither a Mercruiser or a Volvo. It's a 1979 block from a Fairlane or Torino car (The D90E shows that) and both Volvo and Mercruiser stopped using Ford engines in 77.
When Volvo did use those engines in the mid 70's (only for 2 years) they were known as an AQ190 or AQ240. the 190 being a 302 engine.
Parts for Ford from Volvo is almost non existant. The Exhaust manifolds on your engine are Not OEM, as they don't exist any more.
Other than that, you have what you have.
Here is links to download the Volvo manuals for your engine and 270 Volvo outdrive.

Yes, it sure is a 302 Ford engine. From What I have seen is is the Volvo/Penta version. They used the center dump exhaust manifolds. Not too sure about the carburator. Looks like most of the correct coolant hoses are there.
