I have a Bob Kerr tool. just bent the hooks and snapped one of the slide supports and then snapped the hook. I have seen what look to be sturdier ones out there but they appear to be around $300. anyone know of a good one for under $200

First off, If you bought this tool from Bob Kerr you may want to see if there is any warranty on it. Second. After you get a new tool you'll probably want to get out the "Blue Wrench".

I agree with Boobie, the blue wrench is the fastest and the cheapest tool in the box. You don't necessarily need acetylene either, just some MAP (jacked up propane) gas will do. Of course you'll need to re-paint some areas but, not difficult to do.

You did that damage to a Bob Kerr carrier puller? You've got one hellava jammed carrier there. You were applying heat to the gearcase in the areas where the carrier sits/seals weren't you?

lol Faz...yes the bolts were out...no I did not apply heat..I do have a mapp gas torch and ordered new hooks for the puller..I also ordered a glm90095..looks a little more sturdy..I bent the hooks on the Bod Kerr one last time I pulled a carrier. had a hard time getting them straight. it moved about 1/16 inch then just stopped. it is the carrier with the 2 bolts on the outside...not the 4 bolts on the inside.

I got some 3/8" by 8"? eyebolts and cut about 1/4 of the eye out to hook inside the case. Just put the puller on tonight. Hope it pops loose with some heat.

the very best and strongest carrier puller is the factory special tool which consists of 2 heavy steel L-shaped puller rods (#353803) that fit into the heavy duty flywheel puller body and center screw that mounts on the propshaft. Steel pins position the carrier pullers in the body and you turn the large diameter center screw to remove the carrier. On salt water engines, the judicious use of a torch is recommended.

Re: what is the best Bearing carrier puller??

new rods arrived yesterday..I heated and tightened until the new hooks are bent some..so I stopped..got it to move about 3/8 inch...new GLM 90095 is supposed to arrive today...so we will see what happens...o yea i have been spraying it with penetrating oil each day since I started. to the eye it does not appear corroded..but it is a 1989 engine and probably never has been pulled before and used only in salt water. thanks for all the advice...maybe i get 2 torches and heat both sides at same time..

Re: what is the best Bearing carrier puller??

I had similar results until I made a really strong puller from a scrap 3/4" thick draw bar, some heavy all thread, and instead of bending to catch the webs, I made thick steel toggles (5/8" thick), tapped with nuts top and bottom to lock the toggles. I used a Gr8 center bolt. Used the sucker many times and it never failed. The motor I made it for (an '85 J140) had seen mostly sw use and the carrier needed to come out about 5 years from new. It required a lot of heat and huge force on the webs, but finally, very slowly came out. Some of the difficulty was corrosion, but tight fit was most of it. Bearing carriers were mostly easy after that one.

Penetrating oil and magic potions don't help in most cases. Good luck.

Re: what is the best Bearing carrier puller??

thanks Jim and Merry Christmas...I just got the GLM puller and tried it...i had to put metal wedges behind the bars to keep them from slipping off..if you are familiar with this type puller i guess you know what I am talking about. I have been using a prpopane torch so far..I have a friend who has some mapp gas torches...I will regroup after Christmas and try it with a mapp torch on each side,,I had a lot of pressure on it with the GLM puller and was able to use my air impact wrench..I think more heat will do the job...I will post results after the weekend.
Merry Christmas to all and Joy to all boaters...well the world too...LOL

You may want to find somebody with a acy/ox torch as they have always worked the best for me. Just don't heat it till the alum starts to puddle. It'll need a paint job when done buts that's easy.

Best to keep a acetylene torch about 50' away from the aluminum. That torch is way too hot. The slightest goof = $$$$$! In over 30+ years a propane torch with a blow torch tip has never failed me.

The trick with an acetylene torch is knowing how to use them. Been in FL for over 21 yrs and seen a lot of techs that know how to use them and they always seemed to get things apart with out hurting them. Of course painting was always necessary.

Worked in my dad's salvage yard for many years as a young man, felt like I was born with that acetylene torch in my hand at times. Know how to use it, know what to keep it away from. However, if one wishes to use it, I have no problem with that.

My Daddy had a repair shop and put one in my hands approx 55 yrs ago, showed me what it did and have been using one ever since. It's fun to weld with one of them with a coat hanger. Especially up hill.

Re: what is the best Bearing carrier puller??

so Joe, are you saying that it does not have to get real hot? I was going to try using 2 mapp gas torches..I do not think they get hot enough to melt aluminum.
But the 1 propane torch approach does not seem to be working, I was thinking it needed to get a little hotter... any other ideas?? Thanks for your input...and by the way i cut my own umbilical cord with an acetylene torch...ROFL
Merry Christmas to all..Peace on earth and goodwill toward men

Sparkie, you have to have a lot of respect for an acetylene torch. If they are used the correct way with the right tips they will do wonders, especially in salt water areas.

Re: what is the best Bearing carrier puller??

roger that boobie. I am very familiar with acetylene torches. If it was all I had I would be confident enough to use one in this case. All you would have to do is turn the O2 down just a little and get a more yellow flame to control heat..it will smoke some but work ok...but I have access to mapp gas torches which I hope will get it hot enough..I will keep you all posted on my progress. Thanks for all the help.
