The problem with aluminum is that it goes from hot to puddling in a heartbeat, unlike ferrous metals, which go through observable color changes, softening, then eventually melting. I've used oxy acetylene many times, but it requires way more care, flame management and attention on aluminum, as has been noted. While MAPP isn't as hot, it does produce enough to damage.

well..I have screwed the pooch on this one...I broke the carrier housing with the glm puller...it moved about 3/8 inch then just stopped..I used propane torch and heated and pulled slow and easy..finally the carrier broke. no idea what to do now..I have another foot from a 84 150 with a cracked case..but it has the four bolts in the back style carrier. And I still cannot get my carrier out. maybe I could split it somehow...or I may just try to find a good used foot...anyone near Savannah got a 25" shaft V6 foot....O yea one more thing..this is a counter rotating foot, I assume a standard rotating foot will work fine..I will just have to get a prop also.

Now you tell us it's a counter rotater. To pull those apart you use an adapter on the end of prop shaft and use a big slide hammer. That's after removing the retainer bolts that hold the carrier in. That's where a good OEM manual comes in handy. You may have already messed something up in the g/c it self.

The way counter rotator g/c's are designed internally you have to pull those apart by pulling on the prop shaft only. Actually the reverse gear in a normal g/c is the forward gear in a c/r. They are bass ackwards from a regular g/c. That is why an OEM manual is important to have when working on one of them. Yamaha has the same design.

ok..just to let you all know..I put the propeller back on and pryed just slightly and the whole thing just popped right out...so gear case is apart..I checked for slop in the shift lever to where it attaches to the rod like Wild said..but I found no apparent slop. here are some pics of the carriage housing damage..there does not appear to be any other damage that I can tell.

By not giving us all the information that would have helped you out, your wallet will be quite a bit lighter and the gearcase will need some special tools and knowledge to replace the broken parts. You should also order the factory service manual to prevent more problems and to show you how to do the repairs the correct way.

You can find the parts breakdown and easily see how the regular and counter-rotation gearcases are designed by going to www.shop.evinrude.com and clicking on PARTS, then the year and the model number.
