what is the hose sequence for starting a mercury sport jet sportjet out of the water?

Hello,

I've read several posts warning about starting a mercury sport jet without water going through it. My question is, should the water (hose) be on before starting the engine, and should it remain flowing while shutting it off? Or should the engine be started first, then the water, and kill the water, then the engine? Thank you.

NEVER HAVE WATER RUNNING WITHOUT THE MOTOR RUNNING! That is the basic principle.

Ok, so now that the big no no is out of the way, what I do for my Seadoo which is the same principle, I have a quick connect that screws onto the hose. I attach the hose before I turn on the engine (with the hose still off) and then I turn on the engine and as fast as possible, follow with turning on the water. I never run more than 1 minute even though depending on your setup, you can run longer on a hose. Then CUT OFF THE WATER BEFORE TURNING OFF THE HOSE, otherwise water will remain inside and corrosion will occur. I cut the water, then I rev the engine to about 4000 rpms a couple of times rapidly to shoot any left over water out.

PLEASE DO NOT FOLLOW THE ADVICE ABOVE!!!!

Never run the engine without the water running first!!!!! The water can run forever without the engine running.
It is used to flush the engine cooling passages of debris and salt if used in the ocean. If you wish to start the motor out of the water you must run water thru the block.

Never run the engine above Idle out of the water with only a hose. It will overheat and destroy the engine.
The sportjet has no water pump. When running it water it takes its cooling supply of water thru a small hole in the jet pump. I hope your motor is ok...ebay has sportjet manuals very reasonably priced...

Ditto on the above, DO NOT FOLLOW THE SECOND POST's ADVICE. period
Are you using the flushing kit connected to the top of the block on a hose or actually hooking up to the cooling hose to a garden hose? If using the cooling system,
turn on water so that water comes out of the hose appox 1" when hose is held vertically, this is enough water pressure to cool at an idle, too much could force water into the cylinders. Never rev it up on a hose. Could backfire and blow the ride plate off or worse. And bty if you can if all possible don't start it out of the water at all (rider plate thing mentioned earilier)
