Re: What is this and how do I get it out???

Ok thank you all for your help.

As far as the deck goes, I?ll leave it there untill I HAVE to take it up. Which shouldnt be for some time. As long as you all are confident that the ice in between the deck and hull hasn?t/won?t break any seals.

all of the water lines for the bilge pump and livewell should be empty. however the ice did form around the exterior of the lines as they lie in between the deck and hull.

Once spring hits, what measures should I take to make sure everything is good before I put her back in the water?

I am not a boating expert but I am a pretty smart guy in general . . . my opinion is that the ice wont matter unless there is no where for it or the displaced air to expand. Take lines for instance - if there is water in a line, the ice will expand through the line as it freezes. Unless the line is sealed, it wont break the line. Think about a can of soda in the freezer - if it is sealed, it will explode. If it is unsealed, it will just expand out the lip of the can.

Same goes for your hull. If water was able to get in, it isnt 100% sealed and, the gradual solidification of water over time will allow the air to escape without damaging and seals.

That's my take on it.

Here's another tip, don't drill the rivet too fast or it could heat up and melt the carpet, go slow. An ice cube is a real handy tool to quickly cool a hot rivet so you can continue drilling. New drill bit helps keep the heat down also.

If are concerned that you might have formed a leak over the winter, and want to check it out before you put her back in the water, simply install the plug and fill the boat with water. And when I say fill I don?t mean you have to fill it all the way up. If there is a leak the water should leak out of the boat in the same spot that the water would leak into the boat. Good luck and I hope no damage was done.

OK well as long as you all dont think that I need to take the deck up despite the ice in between the deck and the hull, then I wont. Not untill i have more experience and i really need to.

dont worry about the hater comments. a plastic pop rivet isnt something thats very common. ive rebuilt cars, motorcycles, rewired motors, custom made parts, etc but never anything with a boat. Half of my boat is foreign to me and how they work. The reason you take on a project you arent sure about IS TO LEARN. you are taking the right step regardless of what others have said. I didnt even know how to jack up a car when i was 16. how sad is that? everything i learned, was taught by myself and reading. no schooling.

The experts on this forum, which I am NOT, can help you though any issue involving your boat. They depend on your explainations, descriptions and pictures to provide good advice. They have told me when I was wrong and I appreciated it because I hate doing the same thing more than once!

If you are convinced there is ice between the hull and deck of your boat, why not swap it with a car in the garage. Maybe after a few days it will melt and drain out. Might even require a space heater under the hull. Good luck!

Re: What is this and how do I get it out???

Hey everybody just wanted to give you all an update.

As the weather has warmed up (and the ice melted) I was going to stick a hose in the boat and fill her up to see if there were any leaks. before I got the chance to, mother nature took care of it for me. The wind took care of the tarp, and the rain took care of filling her up.

Needless to say when I got out there she was full of water, just about up to the deck. I jacked up the tongue of the trailer to drain all the water out of the drain plug at the transom and there was ALOT. Since the hull held all that water, I'm going to assume no seals were broken and the hull is solid.

There is a small opening in the deck at the transom so that you can reach the drain plug. I stuck my camera down there and snapped a few photos so that I could get an idea of what was going on under there. To answer somebody's question about what the rivets were attached to; it looks like they are attached to aluminum ribs (is stringers the proper terminology?) that are attached to the hull.

Next time I go out I'll take a pair of pliers to one of them and see if I can get it to budge.
