RK-28B Johnson 40hp Electramatic 1966. Ok, so I know I'm missing the thrust pin. Have two bolts there temporarily. But what is the other rod for? Is doesn't swing out anymore, so what gives?
That's the half tilt lock. Once you get the correct thrust rod in there - which will remove easily - that will allow the motor to be tilted without tilting all the way up.
Sometimes those motors couldn't be tilted all the way up (clearance / rigging issues) and that allowed the motor to be transported tilted halfway. Sometimes you could use it as a shallow water drive position. Depending on the boat etc.
Ok, so it won't tilt out any farther than in the picture. Should it come down to horizontal, and the thrust pin behind it? Or does the thrust pin lock catch? I'm getting out-smarted here
The bracket will not adjust properly with those bolt's in the way. Just looking at those bolt's tell you they do not belong there. Those old engine's did not trailer well with out being tied up, or secured. A transom saver would probably be the best out.
For one thing, it's bent. It is supposed to be straight at the top so the tilt lock can latch onto it. Also, I'm not 100% sure it is the correct one for the motor. Doesn't look just right. There were several models.
